1965 Big Ten restoration

My first thought when someone mentions a garden tractor is my grandfathers 1965 Big Ten,  as a young kid I can vividly remember my dad and grandfather hauling fire wood out of the woods across the meadow to the where he stored and stacked his fire wood.  I can remember when I got to drive the Big Ten for the first time, I was king and he was there to show me how to mow and how to change the oil and how to remove the deck and put the plow on to turn the garden.  So I was set on a mission to find a Big Ten.  He sold his and upgraded to a 716.  I tried to search for his but I got to two owners than it just disappeared.  So I found this one in Erie, Pa.  I dragged it home and showed him what I got I was so proud of myself for finding it and getting it running,  I was able to get him on the tractor at 90 and he had a huge smile and talked about that tractor and memories he had.  It is always amazing to me the attachment me have to just a simple little tractor.  I was not able to get a picture of him back on a Big Ten,  I made a promise to myself to redo this little tractor and show him but I didn’t make it.  So it sat in my shed for a couple of years and  now I’m ready to get this done.

So here comes the adventure I’m going to have a lot of questions, so forgive me if I ask something silly I’m just learning about Allis Chalmers ways.  I’m no stranger to restoring tractors I have done several Wheel horses.  I will be looking for parts, I have down loaded all the manuals I can get my hands on.  I trying to find the correct paint codes.  I have seen some tractors with black transmissions and some with yellow, not sure which one is correct.  I have also seen some Big Tens with the a beige or off white dash and some that are yellow again which one is correct?  I’m going to need a supplier of seals and gaskets.  Also replacement seat cushions and arm rest supports.  If anyone knows where to get chrome plating done?

Got a little farther today,  the accessory drive pulley must have been on since the beginning of time.  It took a puller a 2ft breaker bar and a 3ft crow bar to get it off it sounded like a gun shoot when it finally decided to move.  Looks like the the tractor has been repainted at some point in its life.  Also I’m pretty sure it had an engine change at some point also.  It took a lot of heat and a large pipe wrench with a cheater bar to get the exhaust off.  All things considered with a 60yr old tractor she is in pretty good shape.

Lots of work ahead but tough old machines. I have 3 footdraggers that I've cleaned up and used for years.

The Ford looks great too!

Looks to be in good shape to start with. The dash is supposed to be white. There is a colorized brochure showing yellow but production machines were white. Chrome shops are getting harder to find. Check with local car clubs/motorcycle clubs etc. for recommendations.

Paint codes are listed at the below site:

I believe Sandy Lake Implement had access to seat cushions at one point.

Thanks Chris I found this chart but I can’t find the white, are the wheels the same color white as the dash?

It's in real nice shape and should be easy to restore. Looks like it's all there.

It's my 64 Landlord 2012 in yellow.

I always thought the starter, trans and BGB were always black but I have seen some that were the same color as the sheet metal.

I looked at the link with the paint.

I didn't know Martin Senour was still around, Ditzler is another old name

You might try an auto body supply store as they can scan a part and mix the paint to match and adjust it to your liking. They'll also be able to give you a formula should you need more paint in the future. They should be able to mix it a few different types of paints.

Acrylic enamel is getting hard to find now.

After a good washing I started to think about fixing, repairing or replacing the worn out parts and just enjoy the tractor.  After closer inspection it has been repainted at some point in its life or different sheetmetal was replaced.  So onward with the restoration

Well where once stood a tractor there is just a pile of parts.  I’m pretty sure I need a bevel gear box there is no oil in the box and a lot of free play in the drive yoke.  The wheel bearings are dry probably have not seen grease in a very long time. I’m going to be making a lot of bushings she is plumb worn out. Getting the lift handle off was quite a chore but I won the battle I think.
