Newbie - help with my AC 611LT

Hi all, just joined tonight. My father gave me an AC 611LT at the end of last year. This year I want to fix'er up right and get everything working. I just put on some new blades (off a web site, no one in town carries the 18 1/2" inch blades it needed), and now see that I need a new drive belt. This is the belt that connects from the motor to the transmission, it slips quite a bit and I get stuck on the smallest of inclines. Looking underneath it appears the adjuster is all the way out, so I figure the belt is just too stretched out to be useful anymore. I found the link to the Gates site, but am unsure which one I need? They list the following; Arbor; W/36" Deck FHP Medium Horse-Power V-Belt 6870 Deck FHP Medium Horse-Power V-Belt 6870 Drive FHP Medium Horse-Power V-Belt 6890 Mower; W/36" Deck FHP Medium Horse-Power V-Belt 6878 Trans. FHP Medium Horse-Power V-Belt 6885 So I'm guessing I need the "Drive" belt correct? Or is it the "Trans." belt? Also the mower has the 3 speed tranny in it and I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to slip the belt past the shift lever to get it off. Any tricks here? Thanks!

DO NOT buy aftermarket belts. You will be sorry. In am not telling you this to sell Simplicity belts. I am telling you this from experience and to save you some grief and money. Aftermarket belts are not designed for multiple direction use. and are not designed to be run on the back side on idler pulleys. They will work for a little while. (a couple min to a couple hours) The other thing is aftermarket belts are not made in the exact lengths called for by Simplicity. 1977/78 MFG# 1690345 Model 611LT Drive Belt# 1703836 Lenght 91.1" Type HA MFG# 1690269 36" Rotary Mower Arbor Drive Belt# 1713549 Lenght 70.1" Type HA 1657589 Qty 2 1985/86 MFG# 1691041 611LT Drive Belt# 1677097 Lenght 91.7" Type HA 1690708 42" Rotary Mower Arbor Drive Belt# 1668066 Lenght 120.1" Type HA Blade# 1656147 Qty 3 MFG# 1690709 48" Rotary Mower Arbor Drive Belt# 1703466 Lenght 126.1" Type HA Blade# 1656146 Qty 3 MFG# 1690839 36" Rotary Mower Arbor Drive Belt# 1707740 Lenght 69.1" Type HA Blade# 1657589 Qty 2 MFG# 1691127 36" Rotary Mower Arbor Drive Belt# 1707740 Lenght 69.1" Type HA Blade# 1657589 Qty 2 MFG# 1691128 36" Rotary Mower Arbor Drive Belt# 1713549 Lenght Blade# 1657589 Qty 2 Arbor Drive Belt# 1668066 Lenght 120.1" Type HA Blade# 1656147 Qty 3 MFG# 1691129 42" Rotary Mower Arbor Drive Belt# 1668066 Lenght 120.1" Type HA Blade# 1656147 Qty 3 MFG# 1691130 48" Rotary Mower Arbor Drive Belt# 1703466 Lenght 126.1" Type HA 1656146 Qty 3 1986/87 MFG# 1691146 611LT Drive Belt# 1677097 Lenght 91.7" Type HA

Great advise from Maynard. I have had the same experience with aftermarket belts, I would stick with the Simplicity belt even if they are a little higher in cost. They might be higher in cost but your not buying 3 or 4 belts in the same life time of a Simplicity belt.

Thanks for the info! Another question though is that I have been trying to get the drive belt off the tractor and there isn't enough room to get it out between the drive pulley and the frame above. Do I have to drop the rearend to get this thing off?? Here is some ascii art to show what I mean; _________ <-Frame below the seat "where the battery sits" ..===== <-Drive pully ....|| <-Shaft | |()| | <-Back wheels and transmission. My guess is your supposted to be able to get the belt out between the frame and the drive pully correct? If so there is almost zero clearance there. I can push the belt between them on the front side but there is about 1/4" on the back side. In fact you can see rub marks where it appears the pully hit the frame. I use the term "frame" loosely here, I mean the sheet metal under the battery above the drive pully. Any thoughts?
