DGBork Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 Hi all, I want to replace the jury-rigged pan seat on my Simplicity 700 with a more original style seat. I have the 2 brackets, but need the rough dimensions of the seat bottom and seat back. Could any of you with model 700's give me the rough dimensions of the seat bottom and seat back on your tractors? Also, I was thinking of using 3/4 inch plywood for the seat base and back - does this seem OK? Thanks for your help! Dave B. Saunderstown, RI
KSever Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 Dave, You might want to look at this posting I had ask a while back for a B-10 seat. http://www.simpletractors.com/club2/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=17819
MPH Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 Not posititive but I think the OEM seat on the 100 thru the Landlords were a pan seat. Had to buy an AC to get the arm rests and back on the seat.MPH
UCD Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 The 700/725Early Simplicity had a flat seat bottom and back rest The 725 late 1963 had a pan seat BUT The 1963 catalog shows both style seats The 725/700 simplicity owners and parts manual only shows the pan seat. Take your choice
thedaddycat Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 I have tried to figure this one out before... As near as I could ever tell, the two section seat was used up to 1961 or 1962, then pan seats after that. As far as the Simplicity literature goes, I think they used a stock set of photos for the advertising for several years. Take a good look at it, you tell me if you think they're the same pics.....
KSever Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 Gotta agree with you Daddycat about the stock set of pictures. If you look at alot of the Landlord 101 literature it shows this tractor as having a black dash which came on the '64 Landlord and no 101 decal on the hood.
Kent Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 The Allis literature is just as confusing. The Big Ten brochure shows tractors with yellow dashes -- something I've never seen. The B-1 brochure shows solid black armrests, instead of black and white.... In addition to the literature showing older tractors, I think a lot of these marketing pictures were also taken of "pre-production" models that were being tested by the engineers... so the marketing info would be ready and distributed by the time the plant put the tractors into production.
DanBov Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 I just bought a 725 operators manual . The cover has 725 on it , but the tractor pictured below it is a model 700 . You can see 700 on the hood emblem . It appears that they did reuse and mix pictures and diagrams of these early models . Dave , I just picked up another 700 today . The seat board was pretty rotted away but I can get a rough measurement off the vinyl covering tomorrow . Dan
UCD Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 I have 3 700/725 manuals in my computer 2 are printed tp1231 1 is stamped 1231 and that manual title is Model 725 dk Model 700. the other two say Model 725 & 700. all three are titled owners manual, and parts and all are the same inside.
DGBork Posted July 16, 2003 Author Posted July 16, 2003 Thanks for all the seat input! You have given me plenty of info for building a replacement seat. I think my model 700 is a 1961 (by the engine numbers). It had the remains of the original 2-piece seat on it when I bought it - the wood was severely rotted and the seat back was missing. I removed and saved the brackets, and rigged up a spring seat from an old sears suburban tractor. This seat is too high, and it gets a little 'tippy' when going over bumps or when plowing gardens (one wheel in the furrow, one wheel up). Anyway, over the next few days I'll put together a 'close to stock' plywood and vinyl covered replacement seat that should be more stable. Thanks again! Dave B. Saunderstown, RI
MPH Posted July 16, 2003 Posted July 16, 2003 I might be all wet guys, but I believe back in the early 60's making a product that sold itself and lasted was more important to people then the 'art' of selling it. Things sold themself on reputation back then, not on million dollar adds played on superbowl sunday. Nowadays there is some pretty lousy stuff sold with proper advertising, its an art in its own...MPH
DanBov Posted July 16, 2003 Posted July 16, 2003 Dave , bottom seat piece measures 18" x 14" . Back rest is 14" x 6" . Hope this helps . Dan
