KSever Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 Got this 4211 all back together and running. Seems like it runs a little slow rpm with the throttle all the way up. If I push the throttle lever up anymore it will choke out. Question is can I adjust the governor to give me more rpm or is something else I should be looking at? If it's the governor how can I adjust it so I know it's running at the right rpm of 3600?
KSever Posted July 29, 2003 Author Posted July 29, 2003 I think I just answered part of my own question from this other post after doing a search on Governors. http://www.simpletractors.com/club2/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=13654&SearchTerms=governor
EDS Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 Kris, I will trade you. The 2411 I worked on yesterdy has a governor that won't slow the engine down. It seems like the amount of travel where the governor pushes the throtle towards idle is way too small. I set the throtle wide open and adjusted the governor shaft full clockwise. Anybody need a 4211?
PatRarick Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 Kris, I believe the engine in the 4211 is the "choke-a-matic", meaning that the choke comes on just past full throttle. Check the link to the choke as you move the throttle to full, and notice when the choke linkage starts to move. That is full throttle. Anything beyond that is choke. If the engine is running slow at that point, and the governer static adjustment is set, you need to adjust the governer spring. You will see the spring behind the governer linkage plate. It is attached to the governer arm at one end, and the control cable link on the other end. With a tachometer and the throttle control set at full throttle, bend the control cable link to put more tension on the governer spring until your engine is running at 3600 RPM. Pat
BLT Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 Kris, Briggs has a special tool for the spring adjustment. It's a slotted allen wrench so you can get at the arm. On some Simp's and AC's, it's a bear to get at it. And that governor spring is about as stout as I have seen them. It doesn't take much bending on the spring arm to increase RPM. If you need I can copy you a part of my service manual showing what to do.
KSever Posted July 29, 2003 Author Posted July 29, 2003 I thought maybe I had got the governor out of calibration when I took the sump pan off to see how hard it was going to be to change the governor shaft bushing. I did mark the governor arm and the governor shaft so I do know that it is in the same position as when I took it apart. But I was thinking that just a fraction of a hair could maybe get this adjustment off. I might just have to pick up a tachometer I can use on the engine shaft for tuning. As for the governor shaft bushing, I did not change it and now I wished I had since this is the only oil leak I still have.
