What is the best way to keep these from rusting? Is there any way to apply any kind of a paint or coating on these without reducing their effectiveness? Armature = coil.

Not to sound smart, but the best way to prevent rust is to avoid moisture. We should all know that exposure to the elements and mowing wet grass takes its toll, and many times washing tractors does more harm than good. As to an armature specifically (or any electrical component), I would suggest that you leave it alone. Some paints or prevervatives may attack and deteriorate needed insulation or conduct current. If an armature doesn't work, replace it. If it works, don't fix what ain't broke.
