MadMike Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 Can anyone give me some information on one of these, mainly the pull behind self powered model. I'm curious how well this will work compared to the Simplicity front mounted brush cutter. I'm hoping to get something like this to hack down waist high weeds, grass, dogwood thickets, etc. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, MadMike
rokon2813 Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 If you read the ad in the ebay forums, some of that is bogus. They were not designed for brush nor chest high weeds. And contrary to what the man stated they WILL throw small objects if they are laying loosely on the ground. Consider it like a couple hundred golf club heads hanging on chains and spinning at pto speed when you run over that loose object.
JP Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 I would agree w/Dan. Sounds like you're looking for a sickle bar(?) JP
MadMike Posted August 5, 2003 Author Posted August 5, 2003 Thanks for the quick reply guys, that's what I thought. I have seen these mowers before, but never in use. I didn't think they would handle tall, heavy growth very well. $100.00 isn't a bad price although I doubt it will stay there. MadMike
ka9bxg Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 I have one.It does OK but does not work very well on tall grass I ran in first gear and idle pulling it through tall grass. The sickle mower will work better once ,but if you do not pick up the grass sickle mowers are a bear to use as they plug up bad(I have a sickle mower also)Bob
MPH Posted August 6, 2003 Posted August 6, 2003 If you use a sickle mower, then you need a mini hay rake, if you rake it into windrows, then you must have a mini haybaler, then a mini horse to eat the hay too produce mini manure to use in your mini spreader to fertilize the stuff you cut so it grows faster and you can justify all the toys you now have just too mow off some weeds..life is to complex, think I'll move into a condo...MPH
rokon2813 Posted August 6, 2003 Posted August 6, 2003 LOL MPH, that reminds me though. If there are any "mini" farmers here I think I know where there are a couple either nearly new or NOS mini manure spreaders. I havent seen the guy for a couple years but he probably still has them. They were 5 or 6 feet long, about 3 feet wide and wheel driven. I think one would look great behind a B series.
MadMike Posted August 6, 2003 Author Posted August 6, 2003 Thanks for all of the advice. It sounds as if the Front Mouted Brush Cutter is the way to go. Unfortunately, these are about as difficult to find as a 4 leaf clover, maybe worse. MadMike
