burnerbrown Posted August 6, 2003 Posted August 6, 2003 I'm rebuilding the large flow jet on my 14hp Briggs. Someone in the past has had it apart and stripped the threads for the spray nozzle. I spent an hour removing the old one and now having trouble finding a tap. I think its 5/16-32TPI. Any suggestions.
Dutch Posted August 6, 2003 Posted August 6, 2003 That's an oddball size, but you're right, it's a 5/16"-32. Briggs sells the tap. Before you go any further, look closely at the threads. Are they stripped, crossed, or flattened? I had a similar problem a few months ago. Varnish flattened the threads when I removed the jet and I couldn't get it back in. I used an 8-32 tap to the chase the threads on both the jet and the housing. It worked fine, it was time consuming.......... but it saved an otherwise good carb.
burnerbrown Posted August 6, 2003 Author Posted August 6, 2003 Dutch, I would describe the threads as moslty flattened, so I think I can clean up whats there. I have looked on B&S.com, and have not found anything. Is there somewhere else you buy your Briggs tools or am I looking in the wrong place? Chasing with an 8-32 sound like a good possibility too. I need to do some grading work for my new shed and want to get the Baron up and running. Thanks....

Some specialty hardware / machine shop supply houses can get that size, but it may not be the same as the Briigs tap. Your Briggs dealer has it in his catalog. I don't own one, so I don't know if there is something else special about the Briggs tap (like length or bottom out design). Since the jet is brass, and the body is pot metal, chasing the threads with an 8-32 isn't a difficult job. Took me about 30 minutes.
burnerbrown Posted August 6, 2003 Author Posted August 6, 2003 sounds like a plan as thats a tool I have...thanks for the idea
