Except for head and exhaust gaskets, I always use a sealant (I'm old fashioned). I use a non drying sealant like permatex on the side that's tough to scrape off, and a contact or silicone adhesive on the other. I do this to be nice to the next guy that has to take it apart. Plus, the next guy could always be me.

Does anyone use grease anymore on gaskets? In the old days we did that to help them stick and to assist in later removal.

I still use grease. It's always available, inexpensive. Scraping off an old gasket/adhesive combination takes longer than the actual repair. Steve

Grease holds it in place, allows for easy removal and if your going to use sealant where a water jacket is not involved is useless.
