i have a 3416h sovereign i need help with, it will no longer pull in forward or reverse, the pump still gives enough pressure i have been told by a local mechanic to do the job but to no avail, still no movement, recently someone looked at it and cleaned the "valves" and it worked fine for a few days, but it has stopped all movement again, any longterm fix ideas out there?

You could start by changing the fluid and filter and see what that does for you....

i hate to display my ignorance, but any idea where the drain plug is for the hydraulic fluid?

The hydro and gear case share the ATF. The gear case is the reservoir. The drain is a pipe plug on the lower side of the gear case.

Change the fluid and filter Make sure it is full and maybe you should clean the Valves again. Vickers Hydro Pump Landlord, Sovereign, B Series, 300, 400 and Baron Prior to 1975 FLUID = Dexron Automatic Trans. Fluid (only) AMOUNT = 56 oz. (Fill to bottom of check plug in reservoir) FILTERS Vickers Hydro Pump. 3100, 3200, 3300, 3400, some 7000, HB-112, B-200, 300 and 400 Series Tractors. FILTER # 166147 I can not find A cross # to a Wix/NAPA or a baldwin filter

the system must be bled of air before the tractor can be returned to service. To accomplish this, fill the reservoir with clean hydrostatic fluid. Disengage the transmission lever at the rear of the tractor. Remove the spark plug from the engine. Using only the electric starter, turn the engine over, moving the hydrostatic control lever from full forward to full reverse. Add fluid as necessary to retain a proper reservoir level (proper level is to the plastic plug). Once the unit no longer needs fluid and no air bubbles can be seen coming up in the reservoir, the reservoir can be capped, the spark plug reinstalled and the tractor will be ready for service. Readjust neutral and test run as needed. HYDROSTATIC NEUTRAL ADJUSTMENT If the tractor tends to creep (move slightly forward or back. ward)when the hydrostatic speed control lever is in the neutral position, proceed as follows: 1. Raise the seat deck by following instructions under Raising the Seat Deck on page 10. 2. See figure 5. Move the gear shift lever to the neutral position as shown. 3. See figure 10. Loosen the two locking nuts (B) on either end of turnbuckle (C). 4. Start the tractor engine and set the engine speed control so it runs at about l/3 full speed. 5. Make sure the hydrostatic speed control lever (Figure 2, item B) is in the NEUTRAL position. 6. CAUTION: USE CARE WHEN WORKING AROUND MOVING BELTS AND PULLEYS TO KEEP HANDS, CLOTHING, ETC., FROM BEING CAUGHT IN THEM. 7. Jack up and block the rear of the tractor, so the rear wheels are free to turn. Use an open end wrench to rotate the turnbuckle (Figure 10, item C) until the rear wheels do not rotate. When the rear wheels do not rotate when the engine is running at l/3 full speed, the hydrostatic neutral adjustment is correct. 8. Shut off the tractor eng&e and remove blocking. 9. See figure 10. After allowing the belt and pulleys to stop turning, use two wrenches to tighten the locking nuts (B) against turnbuckle( Tighten the locking nuts (B) one at a time, while using the other wrench to hold turnbuckle (C) from rotating. 10. Lower the seat deck.Place the shift lever in DRIVE position and check your adjustment while sitting in the tractor seat by operating the engine at full throttle with the hydrastatic lever in the neutral position.

Carl, I don't believe the hydro unit and gear case share the ATF. The hydro pump and hydro motor share the fluid along with the ATF cooler and circular shaped reservoir. The gearcsse uses 90 wt gear oil and the drain plug is as you described. Keith, I think there are two plugs on the reservoir, the upper one being the check plug (fluid should be to the bottom of this plug), the lower one would be the drain plug (if there is one, might just be the outlet connection - memory fades). The filter Maynard mentioned is in the reservoir and is accessed by removing the top cover.

The 3400 series tractor uses the Vickers hydro. It is separated internally from the gear case. The gear case uses gear lube while the hydro uses ATF. Draining the gear case will not drain the hydro. The drain plug for the hydro is at the bottom side of the filter canister. Pat

I will defer to the others, I have not worked much with my 3416H yet (since the engine isn't running) and assumed it was like the Sundstrand setup.

after changing the filter and replacing the fluid 3 different times, i thought more drastic action be taken, i removed the diverter to find the "valves"? were completely worn off the ends. i assume these are the valves, looks like a revolver with multiple plungers inside. some of them were still intact, however the ends are almost all completely eroded, couple of them are missing, any hints where i may be ablle to get my hands on some replacement parts, this is a daily driver and would really like to get her going again
