Pros and cons of 5216

Recommended Posts

dlcentral
The 5216 is a LAWN tractor, makes a very fine mower, BUT DO NOT plow snow or dirt with it.The aluminum trans[5 spd. that is!] is the weak link in this puppy for sure! It won't take too much abuse! The spider gears just LOVE to pop out of the case halfs when stressed!A snowthrower however is fine for this unit because when using a thrower you're NOT really abusing the trans too much. Good Luck with whatever you choose! dlc

Hi, You didn't say if the tractor was a gear or a hydro. I agree the gears are subject to breaking if used too rough. The hydros are very good tractors, and have very few problems. The mowers mow very well and throw the grass out well without bunching. It is considered a lawn tractor because it will not take a tiller. It will puch snow and run a blower well. We would probably get up to 1695 for one that we had gone through and serviced, quiet or new bearings in the mower, very good or new belts etc. In our area they are still a very popular unit. Just keep the front wheels greased regularly as they are bushings. All you have to do is feed them grass. Good luck. Al

My dad has a 5216 that he bought new in 1985 or so. He has not had any drive train problems that I know of. He uses it to push or blow snow , mow about 2 acres, pull a cart and roller. Although the tractor has a few scratches from low tree branches, it is still mechanically sound. But, like was said above, you can't abuse it either.

Over a year ago, you answered a question I had about the tool bar for my FDT. In your reply dated Dec 31, 2019  you said the spacer, part #16, goes in the bar to allow for up and down depth adjustment. does this mean the bolt has to be tightened at whatever depth desired or does the bolt slide up and down, allowing the lower hitch to free float?
If it is tightened so the lower hitch and the bar are rigid, then is the depth to be controlled by the shoes? Or by the lift handle?
Is there any kind of user directions for the tool bar? The Outdoor Power Manual basically shows how to assemble the bar but not how to use it
