Breaker Points, the culprit

I spent yesterday morning with the deck off, sharpening blades and cleaning the underside. started up the 312 to cut some grass. The engine started right up as always, then died. Checked the fuel shut-off, it was open. Tried a little starter fluid, still nothing. Okay, I have no spark. I removed the points cover and find it full of itty-bitty pieces of grass and dust. I sprayed the points with contact cleaner and while I was there ran some emery cloth between the points. Problem solved, starts and runs as expected. I'll neeed to get a new gasket and rubber wire seal this week. I usually use compressed air to clean with. That is probably how the debris got inside the cover. Steve

I had a problem with my points on my Wonderboy. Briggs suggests that after you sand the points that you run a piece of paper between them to clean any particles that will mess you up. It happened to me and I couldn't figure why sometimes I had spark and sometimes I would not. Wiped them points and I was good to go
