hydro problems?

Howdy all, Just returned from a few weeks on-duty and figured it was time to get back to work on my bud's 3416H. Managed to get the ol' Briggs running like a top this afternoon (first breath of life for it since I picked it up). I've never messed with a vickers or sundstrand. Topped it off with ATF, but aside from a definite change in noise, she's giving no movement fore or aft. Do these things need to be bled for potential air bubbles? Also...I seem to recall a few past posts regading the fact that a vickers machine can't be pushed around...meaning no "free-wheeling" valve. This provides a possible symptom, since I can push this one around without great difficulty...didn't even need to fire-up the B to drag it. Should this fact lead me to believe the problem is connected? I'm in a bit of a quandary as to where to start with the hydro...any suggestions? Thanks much

The vickers has a push release lever on the back of the tranny. Pushed to the right is disengaged to push, while locked to the left is drive. These push easily when disengaged. The Sundstrand has bypass valves on top that when pushed down let the oil bypass and allow you to push the tractor , though with extreme effort.

Though this Simplicity manual doesn't give specific troubleshooting advice, it's a great starting point to understand how these hydro systems work: http://www.simpletractors.com/service/hydros/hydraulic_systems.htm

Sam and Kent, Thanks fellas. I'll poke around the old girl and see if the lever is disengaged...that would be very nice. My friend needs to do some tilling with this thing so it's re-birth has moved up my priority list. I've worked on large machinery and understand all the principles behind hydraulics, etc...but never messed with the little guys. The link helps a lot. thanks again

Bob, I was just kinda gazzing at my 3314, which is missing the hydro part of the tranny, the other day and spotted this lever just to the rt of center on the back of the tranny, I assumed it was the release lever, now I know, in case I ever come up with a Vickers. On there it latches up, I'm guessin thats engaged, and flips over to the rt of the tractor..MPH

Any recommendations on a good place to get a Sunstrand hydro off a 716H rebuilt?

Sam, those sunstrands sure are hard to push. I have an MF12 Hydro and it is near impossible to push even with the freewheeling valve open. -Chris

I s'pose I should be worried then. My 716H pushes around quite easily with the engine off. The dump valve is not in the release position (both poppet's are in the out position) and the machine does move around fairly well under power, hence my question about a rebuild shop.
