First, don't ground the amp gauge. All you did was to short the electical system to ground and kick the breaker out. If there wasn't a breaker you would have likely burned the wiring up. You will need to get a wiring diagram and find the wire thats supposed to be connected to the post and go from there. The charging systems on these old Onans are a troublesome thing it seems and very expensive to fix if one needs new components.
