power steering

Being a new member i was looking at some of the older discussion pages i ran accross a question about sovereign models I currently have a 3416h and mention was made of a power steering option. Is that available or does anyone have a spec. sheet or picture. The hydro unit is a vickers. By the way this is an excellent site. Thanks to all in advance ScottS

Hi Scott, Welcome, I hope you get as much enjoyment from this site as I do. The power steering on the Sovereigns is operated from the charge pump on the hydro unit. The Vickers unit uses a small quantity of oil, just the unit and the small tank. I don't know if the charge pump would even have volume enough if the unit had the needed ports. The Sunstrand unit has the provisions built into it and uses the lower gear case as a reservoir. The 7100 had power steering available about the time of the 7790s. This was an assist unit similar to a 50s-60s passenger car type valve and cylinder unit. The new Sovereign, Sun Star and Legacy tractors have a full hydraulic steering. The mechanical linkage [drag link and gear assy.] is replaced with a hydraulic cylinder and controlled by a rotary valving system connected to the steering wheel. The control valve is also called a hydrostatic steering valve. You could probably make something work, and drive it with a separate pump, but nothing already engineered and in production will adapt. Again welcome and enjoy. Al

Hi Scott, I have a new Sovereign and a 3416H (currently being restored). Are you aware that option is about $600? (Ouch) And you may not be happy with the results. Steering is vague, and needs some R's on the engine for the pump pressure to keep up with the demand. I agree with Al's diagnosis. That Vickers is a wimp compared to the Sunstrand.
