happy Posted August 24, 2003 Posted August 24, 2003 ive got two 42" decks. One of them doesn't have grease zircs on the mower blade spindles (of course this is the one that looks in better shape),what's the deal with no zircs? should i be using the one with the zircs instead?
andy gartner Posted August 24, 2003 Posted August 24, 2003 See "725/Landlord 42" mower deck" for the deal on no zerks.
Kent Posted August 24, 2003 Posted August 24, 2003 Note that the arbors use sealed bearings any way, so you're not greasing the bearings even if you have zerks... you add grease just to keep them from gathering moisture inside the arbor housing and rusting things up....
PatRarick Posted August 24, 2003 Posted August 24, 2003 I believe that you can only get bearings that are sealed on both sides today. I used to (and have heard others say that they've done the same), pry the seals out of one side of the bearing for use in the spindles with the zerk. I no longer do that as the sealed bearings seem to last just as long as those you can grease. Plus, it's just one less thing to maintain. Pat
Agricola Posted August 24, 2003 Posted August 24, 2003 If you pop off one side of the bearing and use the zerk where does the dirty grease go when you try to fill up the spindle. Does it ever pop off the outside shield?
PatRarick Posted August 24, 2003 Posted August 24, 2003 I've never seen it pop out the shield, but I suppose it's possible. I just stopped greasing when I felt pressure build up and saw grease starting to come out around the seals. Pat
jkmustang1 Posted August 24, 2003 Posted August 24, 2003 On an earlier tread about this someone said they drill a small hole in the seal facing the zerk. So why not do that on both sides to let the grease through and not pop the seals?
happy Posted August 26, 2003 Author Posted August 26, 2003 I'm going with Pat's suggestion of one thing less to maintain. Tonite we cut grass.
Agricola Posted August 26, 2003 Posted August 26, 2003 I was thinking that after I typed the seal statement. I guess is you are careful you won't pop those babies out. I don't like the oil idea. It would have been nice if they put a slinger/screw in there to move some oil to the top bearing. Oh well, theyl never contacted me for my ideas. :(
