stumpy Posted August 30, 2003 Posted August 30, 2003 Hello all, Went to look at the Gravely 430 Commercial. Appears to be in good condition, with the exception of the paint along the top of the front hood. The 50 inch deck is like new (durn heavy though <G>). While everything I've looked at listed the 430 with a 12 hp Kohler or a 10 hp Onan, this one has a 12 hp Onan...and from the looks of it the thing must be original. Aside from little adjustments here and there the tractor looks very functional. Needs the fuel line replaced and (this might be the bad part) the coil is shot on the Onan...no sparky. Sure wish it had a snowblower or front blade for winter time. Holy cow but this little tractor is really put together properly. Snagged the tractor, 50" deck, a couple of tires and some literature brick-a-brack for $100 total and loaded her up. Nice old fella too...I told him it was probably worth more than that (out of guilt), but he's "cleaning house" and just wanted a few things gone. Finally the tractor Gods smiled upon me. To top it off, went salmon fishing the last two mornings and limited-out both times, so the cooler is full of fresh Pacific NW fish. Time to head back home...wondering when my normal (bad) luck will return....
JoeJ Posted August 30, 2003 Posted August 30, 2003 :DBob, Sounds like a darn good trip. Mabey it's a turn and the good luck will continue.
MPH Posted August 30, 2003 Posted August 30, 2003 Bob, sounds like you had a good day. What kind of Salmon do you catch down there??Salt water fishing or river run??MPH
stumpy Posted August 30, 2003 Author Posted August 30, 2003 Lots of fish in both fresh and salt right now. We were in the salt (Puget Sound) after silvers and pinks. The pinks are in heavy...the fish are about twice the size of most pinks I've seen in Alaska...had one today go a bit over seven pounds. Chinook and steelhead are heading up the Columbia and the Snake on my side of the state, so I'll be back to big-river fishing in the next week.
gretsch Posted August 30, 2003 Posted August 30, 2003 Sounds like a very good couple of days both fishing and tractor-finding. Congrats.
johnmonkey Posted August 31, 2003 Posted August 31, 2003 I have a gravley 816 with a 16 hp onan and a 50" deck (my next door neighbor GAVE it to me). It has a hard time with the clutches and does'nt go into gear easily. I have found a place in West (by god) Virginia. The name is "Richards" I believe that they are on the net. I think that they can get you a manual. Good Luck, JH
stumpy Posted August 31, 2003 Author Posted August 31, 2003 John, I think the clutch issue is more of a problem with the 8-speeds...somewhat different set-up. This just has a two-speed and a hi-low for four forward gears. Sure looks solid. Just got it home and need to get things unloaded. Thanks for the tip...I'll look for the outfit with the manuals tonight.
