PhanDad Posted September 1, 2003 Posted September 1, 2003 Does anyone know if a starter/generator from a Cub Cadet 100 can be used to replace the ones on the early Simplicity/AC/Homelite tractors? They look the same, but the rotation direction may be different - I've seen some listed as both CW and CCW. Can the direction of rotation be reversed by a simple wiring change? Thanks for you help.
Brent_Baumer Posted September 1, 2003 Posted September 1, 2003 I will not guarantee this information, but every Cub SG I have seen rotates in the wrong direction. This rotation can be changed only by changing the field coils to my knowledge. Don't think they are that expensive, maybe $10 per? Been a couple years since I bought them. Brent
Roy Posted September 1, 2003 Posted September 1, 2003 You can change the rotation by reversing the field leads to the brushes but may have to lengthen the wires from the coils to the brushes. This can contribute to reduced reliability since the wires vibrate and are more prone to rub the armature. Brent is correct. The best way is buy field coils designed for the desired rotation.
jlasater Posted September 2, 2003 Posted September 2, 2003 Plus, the cooling fan wouldn't spin the right direction, would it?
Agricola Posted September 2, 2003 Posted September 2, 2003 Did they change the rotation direction of standard engines for various companies making tractors?
Brent_Baumer Posted September 2, 2003 Posted September 2, 2003 Simple John, rotation of the engines is the same. The SG on Sim and AC drives the engine from the back, the Cubs from the front. The SG is mounted 180 degrees from the two manufacturers, hence the diffence in rotation of the SG. Brent
PhanDad Posted September 2, 2003 Author Posted September 2, 2003 Brent and Roy, Thanks for the info. I'm now an educated buyer!
