I'm getting 2.5 volts from my generator, all tests show 12 volts at all other points, is this normal? does this type generator just maintain battery voltage,i've had it apart, looks great inside,B&S manual has several tests, all show O.K.,Regulator is a solid state unit , no idea how to test that,,,, any help would be great.

The starter/generators aren't made for much more than a 10 amp output. A simple test to determine whether the problem is related to the generator or regulator, is to ground the "F" terminal of the generator with the engine running. This bypasses the regulator cutout and the generator puts out full amps. If your ammeter shows close to 10 amps or more with the field terminal grounded, you can safely assume the problem lies in the regulator. Pat

Michael, I am surprised it has a solid state regulator. If you would like some info about these units, there are some tech articles I did for this site, the same items are on out site, edensltd.com under tech notes. These try to give a detailed explanation of how these work. If you would care to, check it out. Good luck, Al Eden

I agree with Pat. In lieu of using the amp gauge, I short the Field terminal to ground at an idle and see if the engine feels a bit of drag causing the RPMs to go down. This helps insure no overvoltage to any lights or motors. On the Simplicity that should not be a problem.

You can do much the same test while the S/G is off the engine. Clamp it in a vice or have someone help hold it and hook jumper cables to it and while its spinning short the field. If it slows its working... Not so sure about the low output. My guess would be internal short in the windings...But like I said, not sure Salt
