818GT Steering

Recommended Posts

I have 2 1979 818 GT's. Both are beginning to become harder to steer. A lot of play in the column. Any ideas as to what it needs, before I butcher it?

Hi, I would check the plastic bushings on the steering shaft and the sector arm. Also it is not uncommon for the plates that these bushings are in to be "eaten up" by grass laying on them that they break where the metal is bent or where it is swaged for the bushings to be presssed in. Pull the steering wheel off and take the dash assy. up and check it out. This is not normally that expensive of a fix. Good luck, Al

Also check the collar setscrews that hold the steering arm - they can loosen and allow the arm to drop down from the plate and cause play - push the arm upward when tightening them - there are two.

Thanks, the bushings were only $5 but the steering wheel had a lot of play and had to be replaced. Also the set screws were loose. Should work almost like brand new. Thanks again.
