Ignition Problem Big 10

This weekend I just finished cutting the grass with my Big 10 when the engine quit. This quit was as if the key was turned off and the engine lost spark. I pushed it in the garage and went to my sons Soccer Game. After the tractor sat for a while it started back up. I let it idle for a while, and then it quit on its own, and it would not start back up. We went to Dinner, then upon my return I removed the hood and spark plug. Holding the spark plug on the engine block with a pair of pliers I tested to see if there was spark. There was spark. Then I returned the plug and the engine started. But after only a few minutes of Idle, the engine stopped. I removed the spark plug and grounded it to the engine block. No Spark. Any Ideas? The points are pitted. But I have seen worse. What is a test for a condenser? Coil? Or Relay? Thanks Frank

Sounds like you have a broken lead in the coil, that makes contact when cold, but opens up when it warms up. I have seen this several times in coils. Point corrosion will be consistent, and usually work better when warm. Condensers are almost always either good or bad. I have never seen one sensitive to temperature. An engine will run with an open condenser(not very well), but not a shorted one.

Is there a way to test the coil? or just take it out and replace it? Thanks for the tip. Frank

You can bench test a coil but not for breaking down under heat..I have to agree with the above post. Replace the coil, thats the only real option

It may also be something simple like fuel starvation. Possibly caused by crud being sucked down over the fuel drain in the tank, allowing a limited amount of fuel and then clogging.

Bought a Kohler Coil and Condenser, Going to try that. I will also get a roll of 14 ga wire and connectors and replace the leads on the coil. Thanks for all the help. Frank

Am I missing something here ? You have a big 10 but bought a Kohler coil ?

yes one of the forums said that a kohler coil had a resistor in it that it did not burn up the condenser. .. maybe.. maybe not... It is just a 12v coil. seems like once you have made the conversion you have already left the briggs parts... Engine acted the same with either coil. Thanks Frank

It you have the Kohler coil connected to the points and condenser, you have to unhook the B/S magneto completely and run from the battery like an automobile. If you still have the magneto hooked up and it shorts, it will still kill everything. I have a B/S that I have run for over 15 years with a Kohler coil setup, but the original Magneto is laying in the back of my garage. Run a hot from the ignition switch to (+) on the coil. Run (-) on coil to points and condenser. Unhook all wires from original magneto.

Frank, There seems to be a problem with the picture. I had to copy it to my graphics program for it to show up in the larger size. Very nice tractor and a handsome young fellow that I know you're very proud of.;) You may just have to get another tractor soon, so you'll have one to ride.:D

Frank rename "big 10" as big10 no space and it will show up on your profile.
