Hello, is it possible to make your own pair of tire chains? I am pretty mechanically inclined and probobly wouldn't mind on getting started. I have a simplicity 725 and the rear tires are tall and narrow, it isn't your "standard" lawn tractor tire and I notice its hard to find at local sears or home depot. Also new chains are somewhat expensive in my area, almost $50.00! Anyways, has anyone tried this and has it turned out succusfully? If not where can I find the right chain for this wierd tire? Thanks, Gary

Yes..... If you have, or can get, an old set of car or truck chains you can resize them to fit your tractor. Even with bolt cutters and chain tools there is some work involved. If you plan on buying new chain, you're probably better off buying ready made tire chains. Here's a supplier that should have the size you need. > http://tirechain.com/ Have you checked eBay? Sometimes you can find a good deal.

Gary, somewhere in the pages of info here I posted making a set of chains for my 4040. Its possible and worth while if you have the parts for free..MPH

Hi, Idon`t use chains but an old timer who is now gone told me that the best fit that he found was with a set of ford falcon tire chains I don`t recall if any links were removed or not, there was so much I did not get to ask him . lol. John

Meaqsure the diameter and width of the tires. Then find a car with the same diameter and width tires. Buy a set to fit the car and you are in business. I have also cut down larger chains. It is work, but can be done. Hardest part is opening the original end hooks, especially if you are trying to re-use them. Also make sure the cross links go down the side at least two inches. If the side chains run too close to the tread, you will have a hard time keeping the chains on the tires. "Voice of experience".

I've made of couple set of chains for garden tractors from old car chains (chains were from the '50's). Just had to cut down the length. I found adding extra cross chains to the original car set up works best for my tractor (and steep driveway grade). The original car chains had a cross chain every 4th side link, now the tractor chains have cross chains every other side link.

Anybody try adding links to smaller chains? I just added 2 links using the link type that screw together on one side, and I am just wondering if they will hold up. John
