DaleC Posted October 22, 2003 Posted October 22, 2003 Kirk, I know you have extensive knowledge of the old and new style axle and differential. I have this much done on the B12. As you can see I am down to pulling the gear INSIDE the differential. I cannot pull the left hub as it is damaged and "hung" in place. I am wanting to pull the axle so I can wield the hub to the axle. Am I going to have to disasimble the differential to remove the gear and pull the axle? Is there a better way? Thanks, Dale
Salthart Posted October 22, 2003 Posted October 22, 2003 one retaining ring, 2 keys and a gear should be all that is holding you now. You can remove all the nuts holding the differential and pull it as a unit without tearing it apart. This will allow you to get to the snap ring etc. Once this is done, if the axle don't slide out freely, File the edges of the keyways.
DaleC Posted October 22, 2003 Author Posted October 22, 2003 I.e., there is one more retaining ring BEHIND the gear as shown. I already have one snap/retaining ring out, plus Two washers.
Salthart Posted October 22, 2003 Posted October 22, 2003 DOH.. LOL I amaze me at times... I could not make heads or tails of that picture till just now. And seeing it, It seems I was mistaken about the Diff coming off in one piece, or that the bolts for yours were put in backwards. ( My mistaken memories I'm sure ) But let me try again. There should not be another snap ring holding the center axle.. BUt the gear must come out so you can remove the keys. The gear won't want to come out because it will hit the teeth of the small gears that drove the other hub gear. But it would be tough to reasemble like that any way. If I were going to pull the differential I'd wash up all the parts and put it back packed in new greese because if I'm not mistaken ( Again) it is the tear strength of the grease that makes it work anyway. Notice the stagger of the diff gears and the way the axle gear is facing. Remove the 8 nuts and slide the diff, off. ( If you do so carefully many times you can lay it face down and place the bolts back in it without a piece moving if you still don't want to go through it ) Slide the gear off the inner axle, remove the keys and slide the inner axle out.. Another thing I remember having done before. Having had lots of bolts on hand, I would sometimes push the old ones out with new bolts. this way nothing moved. BTW, I went out and had a look.. B-10s the bolts are backward like in your pic.. 3415H and 916 H are opposite. Go figure..LOL
thedaddycat Posted October 22, 2003 Posted October 22, 2003 Dale, here's a link to one of the discussions about the differential and axle. I don't know where you were told the differential needed to be disassembled in order to remove it Marty, but I take them off whole as can be seen it the post linked...... http://www.simpletractors.com/club2/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=18377&SearchTerms=3310,H,differential
Salthart Posted October 22, 2003 Posted October 22, 2003 Must be the way I write.. I only said that if I were going to "remove" the diff, I would tear it down and wash out all the old grease and repack it.. I didn't mean to imply that it had to be disasembled to remove it. In fact "Remove the 8 nuts and slide the diff, off. ( If you do so carefully many times you can lay it face down and place the bolts back in it without a piece moving if you still don't want to go through it )"
Roy Posted October 22, 2003 Posted October 22, 2003 Dale, Why not weld the axle and hub "in place" without taking them off the tractor. That's what I did on my B-1.
thedaddycat Posted October 22, 2003 Posted October 22, 2003 Those 8 nuts and bolts are what holds the pinion gears in, though.... They pass through the Carrier, inner cover, pinions, spacers, outer cover..... You can remove the entire differential without removing any of them..... You had said.... " You can remove all the nuts holding the differential and pull it as a unit without tearing it apart." Maybe it's just me, but this seems to say that you need to take the nuts off to remove the differential...
ReedS Posted October 22, 2003 Posted October 22, 2003 If I'm not mistaken Dale at the point your at now you can remove the diff by taking a soft but solid (preferably lead or brass) hammer and carefully striking the carrier the whole assembly should come off since you have removed the circlip that keeps the inner gear from moving on the axleshaft. Work around the carrier tapping it at different spots. Once you have the diff off remove the keys from the axleshaft. File down any high spots and burrs and the axle should be ready for removal. Just my 2c.
Salthart Posted October 23, 2003 Posted October 23, 2003 LOL Your 100% right.. That is exactly how it does read.. Ever have one of those days it just didn't pay to get out of bed ? Oh well, I felt pretty good for a while today but I think I got over it...LOL
HubbardRA Posted October 23, 2003 Posted October 23, 2003 On the late model axles, the set screws can be loostened on the collar behind the left hub, and axle will slide to the right far enough to remove the final ring and take out the axle. Did that recently to change washer locations and unlock a locked rear.
