maxtorman1234 Posted October 24, 2003 Posted October 24, 2003 The clutch on my 712H was all screwed up and the handle hit the fenders when i first got it. I Know what the problem is now and it is corrected. THe other part of the problem is that the original part of the shaft where the nut goes has been modified to a smaller 1/2inch shaft. The shaft has wore, so as the clutch, and the keyway. I have the clutch off my 712S but since the shaft has been altered, im not sure if it will fit on properly. I might need to change the gearbox through the winter and then use the good clutch. Does Anybody know if the gearboxes from a 712H and a 712S are the same? Thanks
dirtsaver Posted October 24, 2003 Posted October 24, 2003 Grahm I think I read somewher that the BGBs from hydro tractors and shuttle tractors are different. If I remember right the length of the cross shaft on the shuttle drive BGB may be longer to hold the pulley assembly. I do know the varispeed BGB shaft is longer on the right side. Even with that the may still work. Your best route may be to order a new shaft and seals and rebuild the hydro BGB Larry
maxtorman1234 Posted October 24, 2003 Author Posted October 24, 2003 THe 712S has the same pulley as the 712H does. I think the shaft is a bit longer though. Do you think the belt would stay on since it is about 1/4inch longer? HTanks
PatRarick Posted October 25, 2003 Posted October 25, 2003 Don't hold me to it, but I believe that the gearboxes are the same on the 700 or 900 series, regardless of the transmission. The variable speed tractors had a longer shaft on the transmission drive side, but that was prior to the 700 series. Apparently, from your photos, your tractor has had the gearbox replaced with a gearbox from a 300/400 series, or an AC built Homelite. Those tractors did have the 1/2" end on the PTO side of the shaft. I purchased a 400 series gearbox for my 710-6 speed. I switched the shafts because of this, then read on here somewhere that you can use the 700/900 series PTO on this shaft. Perhaps someone else can clarify. Pat
maxtorman1234 Posted October 26, 2003 Author Posted October 26, 2003 THe clutch was all loose and rattled when disengaged. THe shaft looks like it has been machined though. The threads dont look factory and the whole assembly has been worked on at some time. THanks, I guess i have to look into changing the gearboxes.
maxtorman1234 Posted October 26, 2003 Author Posted October 26, 2003 THanks, in less than 2hours, i now have the gearbox out of the 712S. THe only difference between them is the pulley. Took the gearbox apart and discovered a pile of grease? Any ideas why this could be in there? THanks
UCD Posted October 26, 2003 Posted October 26, 2003 Yea Someone put the wrong stuff in it not knowing what the right lube should be.
fuzy Posted October 26, 2003 Posted October 26, 2003 There shouldn't be any grease in there just 80w-90 gear oil.
maxtorman1234 Posted October 27, 2003 Author Posted October 27, 2003 I now have the gearbox replaced, they are the same, and the clutch works good. It took alot of work, but it was worth it. At the same time I also fixes the brake. It is not factory but it works good .
MikeES Posted October 27, 2003 Posted October 27, 2003 Pat, some of the early 700 series AC had the 1/2" turn down on the PTO side. I have a 1974 712H with the PTO shaft pictured above (also my 1973 3414H and 1974 3414S are 1/2"). When the clutch went bad it was replace with the 3/4" threaded shaft.
