Tilling, revisited

Well, I finally got to tilling the garden. I had tried tilling it last spring but had problems with the throttle. I dragged the beast to the Colchester show hoping to pick someone's brain. A gent came up to the truck minutes after I had parked, pointed out a missing bracket on the throttle cable and faded back into the crowd. I didn't get his name but "Thank you whoever you are!" Today looked to be the last chance to get the tilling done before the white crud comes so I jumped right on the Big Ten and had at it. Well now. I tried riding a riding a bull at a rodeo once-and only once. Today brought a flashback of that never forgotten expirience!! The hydro would put down pressure on the tiller at unexpected times, lifting the back tyres off the ground and letting the tiller drive the tractor. There I was, trying to stop the machine in the logical way by standing on the brake, then grabbing for the hydro handle which seemed to shrink 6 inches every time I had to lean forward to grab at it and reaching for the dash with the other hand to find the kill switch! All the while steering so that this maniacal monsterosity wouldn't ram me into the pile of tree trunks that I'm supposed to drag deeper into the woods after lunch! The Ten survived, as did I(the row of carrots wasn"t so lucky). Next years garden will be on flatter ground. The drive belt to the trannie keeps jumping off the pulley. (Which probably saved me from a lot more bucking contests.) I wonder if there should be a guide on the trannie for it. Neither the Ten with a 10 inch pulley or the parts tractor with a 6 have any guide on the trannie. And I don't remember seeing any mention of one in any posts. Can anyone shed any light on this? I will have to look thru the site to find operating instructions for thr hydro. I'm sure part of the problem is my technique but I may have something out of adjustment. After the garden finished with me, I decided it prudent to put off moving the log pile until another day!!

You should squeeze the "trigger" on the hydraulic lift handle when you push it all the forward, locking it on a tab, in a "float" position so that it doesn't put down-pressure on the tiller... Here's where they bolt on, though this is for the High-Low on my Big Ten.

Kent, you really need to do some drawbar work with that Big 10. All that perfect paint just doesn't seem right...MPH
