ambler Posted November 2, 2003 Posted November 2, 2003 Looking up from the sump. See Camshaft and gear. Manual ia unclear on pulling shaft. Did get cranks out of both engines
ambler Posted November 2, 2003 Author Posted November 2, 2003 I guess the next thing is to pull the governor. Manual says to screw the long bolt back in and hammer shaft out. In toward the gear? See shaft where long bolt goes in.
ambler Posted November 2, 2003 Author Posted November 2, 2003 Note the tappets stop progess of cam gear. Does it have a set screw?
ambler Posted November 2, 2003 Author Posted November 2, 2003 After posting pics I reread A note from Al: Regarding the Briggs. I believe there is a bolt through the balance gear on the camshaft that goes into a stub shaft on the camgear end. Take this bolt out and remove the gear. You can then reinstall the bolt part way or a little longer bolt and then take a soft hammer and drive the stub shaft out of the block. There will be a welch plug in the block that the shaft will push out. Then unscrew the bolt and pull the stub shaft out. The camshaft will fall out of the way and the crank can come out past it. Goes together the same way as I remember. The camshaft must be "laid in" before the crank goes in or you can't get the cam in. Do you have a fax? I could print a parts pic and fax it to you. Decided to do what he suggested. 1. welch plug popped out 2. removed Gear and cam shaft 3. removed goveror assembly and tappets Two engines now ready for boring, new pistons, valve job and crank ground if necessary. In class this week I will rebuild carbs and check ignition systems for final assembly. Everyone else in the class is working on pushmower engines. I have these two cast irons. Hopefully they will run for another 20-30 years. Thanks Al
rjgoth Posted November 3, 2003 Posted November 3, 2003 Sounds like you are learning quite a bit. I was a small engines instructor for a few years at our local high school, it was one of my favorite classes to teach.
