The question... Will a 16hp Briggs off a 7016 fit in a B series frame without modifying the frame(prefer not to cut). This is a gear-drive starter not a starter/generator. If so, is there anything special to watch for? Thanks! Larry

think you have to change to an old style oil pan. Have read on here about a problem with dipstick newer model engines but not certain of the details..MPH

It'll bold rignt into everything but a B-1, which would require some frame mods. The oil drain and oil fill might be a problem, but that's easily solved. Here's a 30-over 16HP with gear-drive start in my HB-216. I have to pull the hood to check the oil, is the only hassle...

I wasn't aware that 7016 used a B & S gear starter. I thought they were all belt start. 10 thru 16 HP have the same overall envelope size. You will probably have to use your 10 HP oil sump. You should be able to use your S/G. Just remove gear starter and replace with S/G. Re-use your 16 HP flywheel. You should be able to use old blower housing, but will need a piece of tin cut for the back plate from hole left by original starter removal and there is a good amount of cooling air not going over cyl hd fins.. If it has its own internal charge circuit , just disconnect wire back to plug on engine and tie off. I put a 16 HP from a Yazoo on my 3112 and had basically the above problems. Like a dummy I was going to use flywhel from 12 HP and it almost cost the whole 16 HP engine. Anyways, it should go and when you give a squirt of paint of your choice, hardley any one will know.

I have a 14 Hp Kohler in my 61 Wards. Had to drill a hole for the oil drain plug, but the engine bolted to the original holes.

Thanks gang! Unfortunately I don't have a 10hp to borrow the oilpan or starter/generator from as this was a rolling chassis I got in a package deal. I was thinking of building a B-16 and selling one of the B-10s or the BigTen. Maybe I will set the chassis aside for a while and work on one of the other projects this winter. I figure that when I'm not looking is when the stuff I need shows up. Larry

Check out the oilpan closely before you get discouraged. What side is the drain plug on? You may be able to simply turn the oilpan around to put the plug on the other end, if needed. The challenge is the dipstick/fill plug, which can't be as easily resolved.

Kent I understand what you mean about the dipstick/fill plug. On my early B-10 someone replaced the original 9hp with a 10hp Briggs with the dipstick/fill tube in the block instead of the oilpan. their answer to that was to hacksaw the grill frame out to clear the tube. I hate that it was cut but it does work untill I can find an original 9hp or the oilpan for the 10hp with the fill in it and plug the block hole. As luck would have it I have an unaltered grill frame laid back. Then again, the 7016 can be brought back into shape pretty easily so maybe it will find a home where it will be restored and used and I will look for another donor engine. Thanks Kent! Larry

Larry, Go for it. I have found a 16 in need of repair with a stripped out head bolt. If you come to a river you cannot swim, build a bridge, or go home., I am not much for going home if I have an idea I want to try. Someone made what is there work but you don't have to be bound by what has worked in the past. Kent, That is one fine looking tractor. You all are getting me reveded up to go to work on the looks and well as the function!!

I did this conversion and everything fit except I had to cut 2 inch section out of the frame on the left hand side for the oil drain protrusion.I could have changed the oil pan but the motor I had was brand new and I didn't want to screw with the warranty.

I put a 12hp in my Broadmoor. kinda tight but fits great. The olny things I ran into are the oil drain extender and the dip stick. The drain extender I simply removed, and the dip stick I swapped for a shorter one "after marking were the oil should be" I know ther are diferent engines but I figured I would give my two cents. Patrician12, I also cut a hole in the bottom of my side frame on my AC716H so that I could put the 10Hp B/S in that chassis. I wasn't worried about the hole, since I had an extra frame I could use when I located a good 16Hp Kohler for it. Still using the 10 Hp B/S and love the way it runs. Pulls the 48 inch mower, and will try out a 36 inch snow blower this winter.
