Just saved this guy from the fire haul cleanout, going to the dump in the morning. Looked on the old briggs engine link and all I see are model 23, 23A 23C and 23D. No 23BP. Still has army sinal carp tag and was moisture and mildew treated in 1951. Guess that kinda dates it. Has a fuel pump in the block opposite side of carb. Try for clearer pics in daylite but maybe some will reconize it in these. Is this mt LandLord engine???MPH

Marty, Not sure what the BP designation means, but it is a version of the Model 23. My parts manual lists it under the model 23 along with models 23B, 23BC, 23C, 23FB, 23FBC, 23FBL, 23FBP, 23FBPC, 23P, 23PC, 23R6, and 23R6D. Evidently, there are two different 23C's. The one listed in this parts book, is a version of the 23, and is covered by type numbers 203010 to 203986. There is also a later model 23C that is a main model, with different versions (23C-B, 23C-FB, 23C-R6, and 23C-R6D) and is covered by type numbers 707000 to 707981. Pat

I have one of these. It is an old Army signal corp generator. I picked one up at an auction for $20 a couple of years ago. Took it home, cleaned out the carb, got it running. Added bolt on wheels and a front axle assembly from a junk Hahn mower. Works good, its only rated at 7 or 8hp (I think) on the tag. The generator is 2200 Watt rated. I read somewhere that the Govt always underrated the stuff they purchased. I think at home I do have a parts list for this engine. Marty, If you need a copy of the parts list let me know. If I have it I will try to scan it this weekend and E-mail It. GregB

Marty A good engine for a tractor. The Gen. you can mount on the back of a tractor like the AC option Gen. setup

Thanks guys. Gas and oil look clean, might just put a rope on it and see if it fires up, its been stored inside. Maynard, that was my first thought when I saw it. Greg, please wait on such a large e-mail, my printer is down so my e-mail space would be O.D.ed..thanks... Pat, wonder if those were military specials...... MPH

One mans junk another man's treasure. A great find and save. Should bolt right up. Keep us posted on how it goes.

I happen to have one, a 23D-FB that came off a generator. How would I be able to use this engine without hooking up a Starter/Generator?

Nick, if you're going to put it in a FDT, jsut use the rope cup starter adn pull start it......

Can't answer whether or not that is a military designation. Don't know how the earler Briggs designated different things. On later models, such as the 23xxxx, the numbers replacing xxxx referred to the type of bearings, lubrication system, carburetion and starter. The type number designated any differentiation of a base engine ( color, different oil pan, pto end of crankshaft, etc.) Pat

Drained the gas tank, still had red colored gas in it, cleaned both sediment bowls, put in new gas, after checking the plug for spark, OEM military style made to run in a monsoon, Pulled that pre-historic rope a few times, no fire, figuring fuel pump wasn't primed, poured a little down air cleaner tube and off it went. Sure runs nice...What is the reason for using a fuel pump when the tank is higher then the carb??? Also, any thought on how to convert to a normal sparkplug wire???thanks...MPH

My guess is that being a military piece of gear it was designed to run away from a base camp off jerry cans and at base off a 55 gal. drum. That's what would need the fuel pump. At least that's my guess.......

Forgot to mention, I have no clue what type of muffler that is on there, and though I won't say it much quitier, I did notice a lack of the sharpeness to the sound, not the cracking noise..Anybody reconize it..

The shape of it reminds me of a Nelson muffler, maybe the extra pipe and fittings help quiet it down some?

My B 12 came with a muffler that looks like that. I dont know about quieter that the Landlord but it definately a more mellow tone. Just got to get used to it blowing away the grass and leaves in front of the left front tire. LOL

This one has a 90 on the bottom, can you add one on yours???

The Nelson muffler I had was cut off on one end, but it sure looked like a pipe nipple welded onto both ends to me..... It wound up vibrating and rusting out where the pipe enters the can section, so i got a good look at the insides of it. I still have it around if you want to see a pic.....

Sure looks like a gem. I'll bet she's got real low hours on it at least compared to our tractor engines! :D Mil. spec's ought to be tough as nails!

It's a Nelson muffler, still available from Briggs as part #291519. Suggested list price is $37.10. 1" male npt on each end. Pat

Marty I forget the Army designation, but they were only 2000 watt alternators or so and had ZZ Briggs' running them rather then 23's. They were meant to run radio relay sites out in the field. I had four of them to maintain back in the 60's. They had simple switch gear and were meant to run 4 hours and then run another for 4 hours. That got scrapped real quick. We'd hook them up to 5 gallon 'Jerry can' and run them all night. It also was a four man operation to set to the ground. Each set would have 4 oak or hickory lifting poles that will slide in to the ends of the skid.

Wonder if that engine was set up to burn duel fuels ? Some of the o;d stuff started on gas and then was changed to kerosene..Just a thought. Think they would add an extra head gasket when they did that.

Darn it Bob, now I feel I got ripped off, I didn't get any hickory pole..Haven't found any referance to how may watts it puts out. Plate says 22 amps. 50cyl. Is it amp x volts = watts??I don't remember..MPH

The fuel pump was there so that when you turn the fuel petcock down it will draw from the capped line. A rubber hose attaches there and goes to a draw pipe made to quick lock into a jerry can. I have all those parts if you are interested in a pic let me know. Mine came with all this stuff and the poles also. Somewhere on mine it shows a rating of 2200 watts. GregB

Greg, have you figured a simple way to convert to a regular spark plug? MPH
