Where is the marking for the Engine Number Located on a Briggs & Stratton Engine? Is it possible to see the numbers while the engine is still in the tractor? Thanks Frank

What tractor? What Engine? On a "B" series or equivalent Simplicity it is on a plate on the front of the cylinder. Sometimes you can read it peaking through the holes in the grill. On other engines it is on the sheetmetal shielding stamped in.

What tractor Frank?? On the ones with a model 19 or 23 the # is right behind the grill on a plate attached to the shroud that raps the upper cyl..On later models its stamped in the flywheel shroud, about even with the crank shaft...MPH

The tractor is an Allis Big Ten. The tractor has been rebuilt prior to my owning the tractor. Thus, this is why i was wondering it the engine was at least a type match to the tractor. I could not find any markings on the shroud. Thanks for the help Frank

Does the carb body have 3 or 4 screws? Not suree its worth much, but so far any24000 and up series have 4, whereas the 19 and 23 have 3..MPH

Try cleaning the carburetor side of the shroud. Look for a 2 by 3 inch decal that explains what oil to use in which season. The bottom line of the decal reads "Model Type Code." Under these words there should be numbers. If you can't see the decal, try cleaning it using something like mineral spirits. The stamping is pressed into the shroud, so dirt and grime may be filling in the numbers. The numbers may have been worn off or painted over. You can see the numbers without pulling the engine.

3 screws on the carb, one at the elbow bend, one at the two throat body. No decal on Carb side. There is a B and an S stamped in the shroud. The shroud has lined stamped in it. But no Numbers. Sounds like from what I hear the only way to find out is on the flywheel? Is there any match set of numbers to body? The reason I am asking so many questions is that I may have to replace this engine. I have a fin the broke right at the muffler port. It took of a couple threads around the muffler. The muffler still threads and holds, but I suspect long term i am looking at a whole engine, or at least a short block. Thanks Frank

Can you see a plate though the grill? Just below the head..I used a miror to read mine, backwards. Someone may have dropped a 23D in it outta an early B-10..MPH

I will take the grill off tomorrow and look. I have looked there but can see any thing. I have also looked at this information http://www.simpletractors.com/operation/b_%26_s_243431.htm There is not a diagram for the 23D however. Thanks Frank

The model 23's are pre-historic compared to the XXXXXX series..MPH

I'll bet those remaining threads will be there for the normal life of the engine. If your worried about the fin crack spreading due to vibration, if possible, drill a small hole at the smallest part of the crack, i.e., at the location you expect to start running from. The hole eliminates the crack in that part, forestalling crack creep. Obviously, don't drill through the cylinder wall, or damage the head/cyl. gasket area, or anything else, when you do it. Just a suggestion....

i posted some pictures of the engine. I still can not see any number markings on the front top or side. I suspect that this is a 23D Thanks Frank

My two 243431s have the engine number stamped in the fan shroud, up on top, and partly covered by the bracket that holds the tension adjustment for the starter-generator.

Got me stumped Frank, both my 23's and 19 have the id plate showing on your first pic...Kents location is one I haven't seen...MPH

Help me out here guys, but isn't there part of the shroud missing in these pics?

I would need a shot from the flywheel side looking down a little to be able to say..Looks like the piece on top the head could be missing..MPH

I got to see another Big Ten. There is a sticker and a stamp in the sheet metal on the shroud. I think I am going to have to get some paint stripper and remove the paint on the shroud right below the card. The re-paint is thick. also what do you think about the Exhaust port? should i be conderned? or just run it till it quits and build a new one then? thanks Frank

Here's a picture showing the sheet metal on top of the head on my Big Ten. The engine number is partially hidden by the bracket that you see mounted there, next to it, that holds the tension adjustment for the starter-generator. It is not on the small flat piece of metal on the head, but on the cooling shroud itself, between the center mounting bolt (i.e. a head bolt) that you can see and the edge of the shroud that the bracket is hiding. That's why I had such a problem (in addition to rust and dirt) finding the numbers on mine when I first looked.... On my 12HP engine the engine number is down below the carb on the shroud, but not on either 10HP engine that I have...

Here's a pic of the engine numbers on my Big Ten. It doesn't look as good Kent's, but it's all original.

Greg, That's where the numbers are on my 12HP, but not on the 10Hp... strange!

Kinda hard to see in these pics but from the front right under the S/G is that a breather? That may help the ID. The 243431's didnt have that style did they? That same pic, straight above the crank on the flat spot of the sheet metal is where the tag should be riveted on if its a 23d also. At least thats where it is on my early b10 and my (now Elons)landlord. Both were 23d or 9 hp engines.

Kent, Now I'm curious. You would think that all the engines numbers would be in the same place on the shroud in a given time period, and would be changed to a different location on all engines starting on a certain date. Could it be that your 12 hp is older than your 10 hp's? The date code on my 10 hp is 6603081, just for reference.

The B-12 was the first tractor to use the 12HP engine, at around 1966-67. AC claimed the engine was designed expressly for the B-12. I think it was the first application of the 300400 engine. Therefore, it wouldn't be older than the 10 hp. Got this info from this link: http://www.simpletractors.com/models/b_series/1966_cat/power.htm Is there a significant difference in the displacement of the 23D and 243431? If so, you could pull the head and measure the bore and stroke.
