I have a 7014S and am picking up a 7012H Saturday. Could you give me a brief explanation on the difference between the two transmissions.

Shuttle is a gear drive tractor using 2 belts and one lever to get your forward and reverse direction. You have 4 speeds and must clutch to change gear speeds but not to change directions Hydro is a fluid drive. 1 lever controls speed and direction both. No clutching at all.

Thanks SmilinSam, but which, if either, is better or maybe stronger in your opinion.

I am not a shuttle fan. They are noisy . Thats the only reason I can give for not liking them. IMO they are stronger than the hydros, though both hold up real well when taken care of.

Thanks Salthart. My 7014S has a dozer blade & tiller and I'm picking up the 7012H for it's blower & deck. I was told that the hydro lacks a little push strength because it has to go from neutral to third via fluid pressure where my shuttle is instant third. I guess I will soon find out.

I prefer the hydro for mowing and snowthrowing. I prefer the shuttle for blade work (snow or dirt) because I have more control with them on a hard push. The shuttle doesn't use any hydraulics at all. It is all gears and belts. I never have to use the clutch on my shuttles. Just put the shuttle lever in neutral, select one of the 4 gears (without using the clutch), and go forward or backward. I can't see any difference between the strength of either the shuttle or hydro. As for the noise a shuttle makes when the planetary is working, that's normal and I don't find it annoying at all. Some people find the whine from a hydro annoying. Work machines are not automobiles. Normal driveline noises are to be expected. I think shuttles got a bad reputation because many users don't understand how they are supposed to work, and don't take the time to adjust them properly.

I have a shuttle in a 410 that works great,it use to be a pulling tractor.I have a hydro in my HB-212 that I got from Sam,it works great also.I even pulled a sled at Grandview,I ran out of power, had no slippage. The hydro is a little more conveniant to use `but takes a little more horses to run.

In the long run the Hydro will give less problems and last longer. The Shuttles have trouble with keeping adjustments as wear increases on the parts

The wearing parts on a shuttle are expensive and becoming obsolete. So take good care of them. Watch for wear and keep them adjusted.

I think its a pain to clutch and stop every time you need to change a gear. Hydrostatics are great because they are just as durable, and alot easier to use.
