Delco Remy 12 volt starter-generator Question

Hi-- I have a Delco Remy 12 volt starter-generator on my AC B 10 garden tractor. This tractor I just got running and has been in storage for a while. The outer case gets very hot almost too hot to touch after running for a half hour. The bearings are good. The battery is good. How hot do these things get?? What other checks can I do?? (I am reading the regulator and starter generator articles on the AC/ Simplicity website). Thanks.

Mine get too hot to touch but are working fine.

This is a great question. Like yours, mine also gets hot. Mine has been working fine for years like that, I think it is normal, but id also like to know if it is right. Ryan

Good question. Mine gets very hot as well but seems to do fine, other than not making the belt to tight so the bearings don't get a lot of force on them I haven't heard of any thing wrong with them getting hot.

Run a quick current check via the ammeter or put another ammeter in the Circuit. If the current is under 20A, you should be fine and the heat ia generated via mechanical means and not electrical.

You can expect them to run hot. They are in a closed housing to make them stand up to the elements. The higher powered generator units used on automobiles and farm tractors were ventilated with internal cooling fans to remove the heat caused by the higher charging currents.
