Cruise Control?

tej

Recommended Posts

The only tractor I ever encountered with a foot throttle was an old Case farm tractor. After driving that across a bumpy hay field I understood why all the others had hand throttles. I didn't know that Garden Tractors came with foot throttles but I don't think I'd want one. Tim

Please explain to an antique tractor man, in more ways than one, what the H cruise control on a tractor is. All my tractors have hand throttles and go at whatever speed you set the throttle at. What would you need cruise control for when you already have it. Confused as usual. Tim

They aren't foot throttles on garden tractors, they are speed controls for the hydrostatic drive. With a mower, you normally set the throttle for maximum on the governer, and control ground speed with either the hydro or gear selection. Some farm tractors have foot throttles, but they have gear drive, so you can use the flexabiltiy.

It is particularly used with a foot operated hydro. Sometimes the old foot might get fatigued from a larger acreage lot so you can set a lever or button to hold the trans speed where you like it - just like on a car. Doing long trips in my car I know I like to move my foot around some or just to place it in another spot. You're right in that gear shifts and lever hydros don't need "cruise" but it is easier to use your foot to speed up and slow, and go in forward and reverse during "manuvers". Tractors equipped with "cruise" can have the best of both worlds.

Shoot, Tim, you've GOT to get something modern with a hydro! You won't ever want to cut grass with a gear tractor again. (Maybe even as modern as an HB-212!) Fred

Fred, Well I differently need something else to cut grass. My B-12 is to slow in 1st gear and to fast in 2nd gear on my hillsides. I'm thinking of taking the loader off the B-112 and using it to mow as it has variable speed drive. Have to get my B-10 restored to put the loader on. I have been looking for a good used hydro but haven't come across one. Tim

Man o man, who in the heck needs cruise control? I have a allis-chalmers B-10 early and an allis-chalmers B-112I used to cut the yard with the B-10 then the bevel gear drive bit the dust and hit crap bottom so that had to be replaced and I got the B-112. I will tell you the variable drive on the B-112 is just as good as hydro. Really it is hydro in a way, only it has three forward ranges and one reverse. honestly I think gearis better. I have driven my grandpa's allis-chalmers 912 hydro and I did not like it. So don't be lazy and stick with gear.[A href='www.clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/thisoldgardentractor']www.clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/thisoldgardentractor[/a]

Well Jeff I think the Allis dealer in this area must have gone out of business right after the B series tractors because there aren't any newer ones around. Closest AC/AGCO dealer is in Quakertown. I'll just have to start looking at Simplicity, there are a lot of them around. Tim
