Picked up this b12 from Daddycat this past weekend. I've been tweaking it a little every night. Kirk did check out the carb before I got. It was so bad that I replaced it with a used one from a 10 hp. Now that the carb has been replaced I figured that I had better check the gas tank. Now I'm not sure how this stuff is related to gasoline but it was running with this in the tank!:o) Tonight I cleaned the tank out and added fresh fuel and some gumout to the fuel. I blew the mud from the fuel filter and it now runs beautifully. It was a shame to see the almost new tank with this much crud in it. Now that it runs there is a noise it some where I removed the belt from the S/G but the noise is still there. Tommorrow I'll disconnect the driveshaft and see if the noise is gone. I suspect the bgb to be the problem since the 90wt was multicolored. I bought this mostly for the 12hp engine but if it needs work at the bgb I might just part this one. I also found that the front spindle bushings are shot as well as it having a Landlord rear axle. Well Reed, You're on your own journey of discovery. Sounds like it's time for the girls in bikinis...

I wish I would have known you were going to Kirks'. I live a few towns from him. I would have come to help/hang. It's like a toy shop over there is'nt it?lol Elon

Reed, if you decide you'd rather not mess with that B-12 I'll gladly refund your money.....

Kirk after 2 nights work I have it running very well no more flooding, starts right up cold. I threw on a pair of good rear tires. It's not that I don't want to mess with it in fact I planning searching for that noise tonight. My main interest was the 12hp eng which hopefully isn't the source of the noise. The gas did surprise me though I couldn't believe the it was running with that stuff in the bottle. I'm all set with your carb BTW. Elon I didn't know how long I was going to be there or when I was getting there, maybe next time I'll catch you there. Andy I'm already outnumbered here by the ladies. Is there any hope? Scott It's hard to see in the pic but this tractor has a landlord seat pan with rounded pan seat on it not the proper allis seat.:(

What's really a suprise is that there was anything in the tank at all. I pulled the line and let it drain for maybe an hour before I put more gas in it..... Hey, it even still ran like that too!! I'd have to say it's a keeper. How about I get that BGB fixed up and we trade rears back to the right tractors... If you want to try making a B-12 V I have two variable rears to work with.

Kirk putting the right rear on this tractor would be nice. I'm not sure I want to fiddle with the variables but it sounds interesting. I disconnected the driveshaft and ran it and I can still hear a noise. I'm considering swapping a s/g around for giggles, I did find it louder when I put a little bit of pressure on the s/g. Also could hear it in the shroud area of engine, it's also tempting to pull the eng and check to see what's in there and at the same time to clean all of the nuts and leaves and such! I know that there was at least one mouse nest in there too. I should have brought it to work today where I can steam clean it. It's hard to not fall in love with these machines, I really should be working on the 700 and not this!

Reeds, if you have enough slack in your S/G belt loosen it after its running. Not sure there's enough slack for it to stop spinning, but maybe...MPH

Marty, thats exactly what I did. The noise definatly increases when I move the s/g and apply more pressure on the belt. What do these 12's have for a flywheel side crank bearing? I haven't had a chance to look up any info on it yet, guess I 'll have to look in my book when I'm done here. As I said I may swap a s/g from the 2110 and see what happens then. These oldies are a blast aren't they!:D

Ok well I dug out my briggs book (4th layer below this weeks womens magazines) and looked the engine serial #'s. It's a 300421 0120-62 6703091 which tells me it's a 30 cubic inch design series 0 horizontal crankshft flo-jet replacable bearings rope start built March 9th 1967. Further checking the replaceable bearings part tells me that are ball bearings on both ends of the crankshaft. Thats where I believe one of my noises is. I think the other to be the s/g. Has anyone replaced just one crank bearing of this type? I don't believe that the engine needs an overhaul, I ran it all day today hauling leaves and it ran great. It seems to use little oil, I can see it puff a little blue when I throttled it hard. These rings may reseat themselves with a little usage and its hard to say when this was used last judging by the fuel that was in the tank. I guess I'll be pulling the engine soon and at least I can clean it before it really goes back into service.

I have found a bad counter balance bearing bad before. It made a grating noise.

Is it time to use the garden hose stethescope?
Posted
I've been using my mechanic's stethescope right along and the noise loudest in the front shroud area. Having done some more research I now realize that there are counter balances on both ends of the engine. The noise is very similar to the grating noise that KenK mentioned so guess the next step is to dig into the motor and see what turns up. I can at least focus on the mag side of the engine anyway.
