716-H Hydro sluggish on hills

Recommended Posts

Now that I've gotten the intial break downs fixed, I'm experienceing sluggish operation out of the hydro unit. When I make a turn and start up hill the tractor slows down considerablly. I recently changed fluid and filter. Whats wrong! Also how much fluid is needed for proper operation. I was experiencing this same problem prior to changing fluid. I felt that the change would fix the sluggishness, but it didn't PLEASE help. Luther I type fast and don't always proff read, so if I spell things wrong, I apologize.

We block the cushioning spring in the hydro control linkage to stop it from reacting. It is there to allow a cushioned start off but can cause running away downhill & backing off uphill. We have block them as a part of pre-delivery on every tractor that uses this setup for the past 20 years. Also check the freedom of your hydro belt idler arm. If it is binding on the pivot the belt won' be tight enough.

Sandy Lake, Could you provide more details on blocking the cushioning spring?? I have a 2000 Sovereign that like to runaway when turning downhill. Does your trick apply to my tractor? Thanks, Roy

Hi, We have added washers to the cushion spring in the control rod going from the lever to the hydro, but also check the "cam roller" on the shift arm on the hydro. If this is dirty or sticky or the shoulder bolt rough this provides drag so the cushion spring stays compressed. Often the tractor will take off slow with the lever full forward and then pick up speed in 20 or 30 feet. Also the pivots on the cam assembly and where the control rod attaches to the cam need to be lubed. Anything dry or sticky in this cam and roller setup causes the spring to compress when you shift. This is on the 7000 and AC 700 up units with the Sunstrand hydro. Remove the roller and grease it up if the surface is scarred turn it end for end for a bit of added use. Good luck, Al
