3416H Starter/Generator

The starter/generator on my Sim. 3416H went south on me yesterday. I replaced it today with a used model from the local junk dealer. He wants $50 for it if it works. It starts the tractor fine, something my old one wouldn't do, but I do not know if it's charging. If it were not charging, would the tractor die or would it run fine until the battery ran down? If it will run w/o charging how do I test it? Is simply testing the battery voltage enough (assuming it goes up from 12V to 13 or 14V when running)? I do not have an ammeter on the tractor. Also, he said new ones are $300 +. Is $50 a good deal? Thanks, Brent

I think our stock remans are 'bout $130 exch. $50 isn't bad if he guarentees it to work. Your spark comes from a magneto so the engine will run with a dead battery even if the gen is not charging. Hook a volt meter to the battery & compare readings between engine off & running full throttle. If noticeably higher when running it is charging.
