How can you find out the horsepower of a briggs motor?The number off the motor is 170402 1187-01 7105181.all i need to know is what horsepower it is.I know it was made in 1971.Any help would very helpful.Thanks and Merry Christmas to all.Tony

The first one or two numbers of the model number of Briggs engines states the cubic inch displacement. Yours, a model 170402 designates a 17 cubic inch displacement. Take the displacement and multiply by .4 and you will have a pretty close guestimate. 17 x .4 = 6.8. You have a 7 horsepower engine. This does not apply to OHV engines or the twin cylinder opposed engines.
