I was wondering with the Hydrostatic transmissions on these lawnmowers work? is it somewhat like an automatic car motor? and how are the filters changed? Would the Hydrostatic transmission work good for pulling or racing?

A hydrostat is not very similar to an automotive automatic transmission, since it uses a variable displacement pump and valves to control the flow (and gear ratio), rather than a torque converter. Here's a good general description: http://www.simpletractors.com/service/hydros/hydraulic_systems.htm Hydros are not typically used for pulling since they "rob" a couple of horsepower, in comparison to a gear drive transmission. They're also subject to overheating when pulling really hard for a long period of time....
