I have been told that 6" is enough to support a car. I waited until we had at least a foot. I figure the pressure of the plow and the banging of the chains would require the extra strength.

I am about an hour and a half north east of Fargo ND in Minnisota. They tell me that 18" of good ice will hold an 18 wheeler. I have seen old pictures of ice harvesting and they had a LOT of weight out on the ice. I see cars and pickups on our lake all the time. They start at about 8". I would think 6" more than enough for a large frame tractor. GOOD ICE of course. Dan
