Very cheap replacement light bulbs

Many of you have been searching for replacement light bulbs for the four bulb (outside the grill) style. Many of you have also read the post about a solution that requires a piece of glass in front of the bulb. While that solution is a great one, I found a replacement bulb at the local auto parts store. I should warn you this bulb puts out less light that the original or the replacement bulbs that have been found. The bulb is number 1004. Is is very similar to the bulbs used in tail lights and marker lights. It has two contacts in the base. Since the bulb is round it throws the light in all directions. Not the best given the mounting fixture. One could paint the inside of the fixture in silver or white to increase the light output. But the two bulbs were about a dollar each. I know this solution is not the best, but if the bulbs are burned out and you need something, this will work. I think the earlier post about a replacement bulb (with the addition of the glass) is a much better solution. But this will work in a pinch. Rick...........

I was going to try a similar fix on my hybrid (3410/t-13) I already have the outer lens cut. I want to use a piece of mirrored plexiglass on the inside around the light bulbs. The engine was just rebuilt so I should be able to test things out soon. John H

I'm not 100% sure yet. I just looked and the 1156 fits in the socket but only one tip on the end of the bulb (the socket is fit with two tips like the 1157, but the tongs on the 1157 are uneven.) I may go with the bulb you are talking about or change out the sockets to fit an 1156 bulb. John H

If you are looking for a two button bulb with even pins, I found a couple at http://www.bulbs.com/products/product.asp?page=products&class=742 Their models 1142, C94 or C2057 might work. I'm not sure of base size but they seem to be double contact. The C2057 should be quite bright.

John, If you go with 1156 or 1157 I would be interested in hearing how you changed out the socket and what the light output is like. Rick........

Hi Guys, I started the post with the glass lens and halogen bulbs and after Ambler gave me a heads up on a few things I went back and found a 20 watt spot halogen bulb with a lens ( no need for the glass cutout) I also experimented with a 1057(?) taillight bulb with two contact and opposing pins and the light was okay but there was very little projection, you might be on the right track with a reflector of some type. anyway here's the info on the bulb: topbulb.com 20 watt/ lens - MR-16 D.C. W/GLASS LENS look at gbd & gbc link http://www.topbulb.com/find/prod_list.asp_Q_intSubCategory_E_573 here's a 35 watt you can use one of each per side .http://www.topbulb.com/find/Product_Description.asp_Q_intProductID_E_44631

Why not go to Home Depot and get one of those Halogen lights that are used for accent lighting. I think they are 12V and have a built in reflector. I wonder if you might not be able to find a lens also while there.
