Old machine, What is it?

Here is a photo taken in the early to mid '70s. I'm the kid in the far rear corner. I have no idea what the machine is. Looks a bit home-made to me but I could be wrong. What do you think? Looking closely, there appears to be a belt driven gear box that then drives a chain to the rear wheels.

Looks homemade to me but I'm no expert.:D 1) Steering wheel much too large for any garden tractor I've ever seen and a little too shiny..plastic maybe ? 2) Wheel base much too short. (or he is realllly tall);) 3) Engine way too big for any tractor that old ? He sits right at or a little behind axle center... Bet it did some pretty cool wheelies if it didnt go over backwardsB)[:0]

I am guessing that that is a briggs model z engine by the size of it. It was rated 6 horse power. I have an engine just like it that was built in 1946. I am thinking the tractor is a home made special. The popular mechanic magazines used to have plans on how to make your own tractor from odds and ends, maybe that was an inspiration for this tractor. From the picture it looks like the driver is having as much fun as the kids are!:D:D:D Thanks for sharing the picture:)
