Powder Coating, Who has done it ?

Recommended Posts

It is my understanding {so i have been told} that powder coating is supose to be THE way to put a good, durable finish on a tractor. Has anyone here had it done for them or actually done any powder coating ? What were the results ? Does anyone have any tips on where to locate a large oven or how to build one ? This is the info I have found so far. Thanx for any help/comments or suggestions. http://www.coatings.de/manual/kap5-5.pdf http://www.caswellplating.com/powder/powder_coat.htm?source=overture&OVRAW=%22how%20to%20powder%20coat%22&OVKEY=coat%20powder&OVMTC=standard

I had two [B12 717] units powder coated. The results are excellant. The coating is very tough and resistant to almost anything, even a hammer hit. It cost me about 160 180 dollars per unit. The 12 was more because of two colors. I am very saisfied with the job.

Just checked your profile Roger. Those are some great looking tractors. How did you go about finding someone to do the powder coating? Body Shop, Paint Shop, who normaly does that kind of work? Thanks

You have to be set up with the proper powder sprayer with static electricity to coat your stuff with the powder. Then you have to be able to cook it long and hot enough to melt the powder. The key is haveing an oven big enough to fit the size of your metal in. We've looked into this for our tobacco harvester parts and it's not hard and we can afford the gun and electrical stuff. But our problem is the size of the oven we'll need. If we ever get it, probably next year I'll be able to do it myself. Looking foward to it, even if I have to buy the right colour powder myself. It's well wourth the extra effort for a tough finish.

Until Dave just described it, I knew nothing about how it's done. I did know one thing though, when I start restoring these tractors, they're going to be powder coated! I would say it is the ultimate way to go, as long as you can find a source. As Dave stated, the oven is the only thing holding me back from doing it myself. Rob

I have had a few parts powder coated and it works great.I had some steel wheels on a walker done and it still looks like new even driving on gravel. I am lucky as a freinds brother has a shop that does it.I do some transmissions for him as trade so I do not know how much he charges. Look in the telephone book and I am sure there should be someone would be around that can do it.You can not put any putty on or filler and you must have perfect steel or cast It works great.Bob

Samson can you please share a little more info about powder coating. About how many peices did you get done on one tractor ? Any reccomendations on getting peices done? I have been thinking of doing the Hood, Frame and rear fenders done but am trying to consider what other parts i may forget to get done. With the sub $200 cost it may be better to have someone else do it. Thnx for any help

I just found one 5 miles away. They say they can do a 48inch deck for about $200. Good old country boys. I'm going to drop in on them. Thanks for the thead

Yeah Dave, it is, but the way I think of it, is that you would have a brand new, original factory, top notch, tough as nails quality deck. Rob

Alot of the Plating shops do Powder Coating. Most Plating Shops have a Paint facility in which they do the electrostatic process. You may want to check with your local Plating Facility but it will cost big bucks but look at the price of the equipment if you do it yourself verses having it done.

If you can get it sandblasted cheep I know that the price goes way down. That is where a lot of the cost comes from. But it has to be clean with no paint or rust on it.Or the coating will not stay.Bob

Alittle more info, I,m in North Carolina and things seem to be alittle more reasoable here. I had every thing but the engine, trans, bgb. coated. The whole thing has to be taken down to seperate pcs and sand blasted. Then hand sand any rough stuff, fix any dents etc. The rims were done also. The have samples so that you can get as close as possible to the original paint.

Yes there was one chip on the 8 in, rim, I touched it up and put to the inside. Those tires are a bear to get on, maybe next one I'll have a tire man do it.
