Kohler valve timing

Recommended Posts

Problem: KT17seriesII not firing on right cylinder. New coil and wires. New plugs. Compression tests out at 80psi on both cylinders. Every thing we can think of to check has been. My books do not show the KT17 or SeriesII and this computer has issues with Adobe Reader so I can't download the online service manual. What I need to know is how the valves are timed on the twin cylinders. If any of you have the service manual and can email or post the pages on this so I can read them in Wordpad or html. I'd be very grateful. Gotta get this thing going cause it's Eva's tractor!!! I'm sticking with my old Briggs thumpers!

Did you build the carb ? Check the Fuel flow ? Does it run better with the choke on ? or partly on ? THats where I'd look for trouble. As to the valve timing ? If it runs much at all and you don't have a bad knock, you don't have timing trouble IMO. ( Knock from broken camshaft ) IF your bound to check the timing anyway, remove both spark plugs. Use a bore scope on or remove the head on the side that don't run. Get the piston to TDC and see if both valves are closed. If not, go one full turn to TDC again. You should have both valves closed and when you start to turn the engine one way from TDC one valve will open and if you go the other direction, the other valve will start to open. Good luck

According to the manual for my KT17 Seires II sais that the valves should be level when the piston is at TDC, and if the cam to crankshaft timing is off by a tooth, there will be about 0.030" difference in the valve lift at TDC

Hello glad I got on this site. I hope to upload a couple of photos of my Simplicity Broadmoor
Model 707 Tractor. I have replaced all the belts on it and installed a new ignition switch.
Have a mower deck which was in poor shape , repaced a couple of bushings and welded the
deck where there was some holes. The tractor and mower deck came from a friend and the
mower deck metal was getting pretty thin. Some new metal was put in it and we also undercoated the underside of the deck. This was done by my friend Greg Toulman.
I have not put the mower deck on the tractor yet, waiting for Greg to come home and give me a hand. Can you please tell me if there is a manual for the mower deck and where I could get one.
I would also like to get some moon wheel discs as well.
I will try and down load some photos of the tractor when my wife shows me how to.
I really love driving this tractor and also how well it is made compare today's tractors, especially the flexible rear end and the rollers.
      Tell the next time
