DIY Hydraulics

I want to add hydraulics to my 7012H (Kohler K301S). I have a fairly good supply of "stuff." I could: 1. Direct drive a pump off the front of the crankshaft (like the big tractors) 2. Belt drive a pump off the front of the craftshaft or the bevel gear box. 3. Use an electro-hydraulic unit. 4. Add a reservoir and use the existing hydrostatic pump (I'm concerned with overworking or contaminating the hydrostatic system) If I went with #1 or #2 I could use a pump large enough to operate a log splitter. #3 or #4 would probably operate front and rear lift cylinders with adeqate speed, but little else. Anybody seen this done? Can you give me some tips? Advise? Opinions?

The 7100 ser uses steel tubing off the hydro pump to a valve body and lift cyl. I doesn't overwork the hydro and it utilizes the hydro filter to keep it clean. dlc

A friend has a AC 720 with a loader and backhoe. He says that when the backhoe is installed, the loader runs off the backhoe's pump, and has good speed. But, when you take the backhoe off to use the tiller, you have to hook the loader to the hydrostatic pump, and it is very slow.
