Rear Mower ? for Pat

Recommended Posts

So after a good year now are you satisfied with this and is it easy to back up with? Would you make another just like these or different? Was just talking to the wife today about a rear/side tow behind mower that we saw today at TSC. Thought after leaving there that I have almost everything I need to make one of these. Just remembered that you had made a couple.

I have considered something similar to this. Are they 48" decks, how much hp? Was there something like this factory made, I have seen other pictures before? Maybe they were custom made also.

Kris, they work beautifully. Would consider an electric clutch on the engine as the trip ropes sometimes get in the way. Thought about linear actuators to raise and lower the decks, but I don't raise them often enough to make it worthwhile, unless I could get them dirt cheap. Other than that, can't think of anything that I'd change. Backing up with one is possible, but is a little awkward. Two is nearly impossible for more than 10 or 12 feet. Perhaps a tie rod to connect the two at the rear might make it easier to back up. If I get in a bind, it's pretty easy to pull the pin, push the trailers to the side, back up, and reconnect. Ken, these are 48" decks, but the frames will accomodate either size. The hitch on the tractor is made with different hitch points for the frames to accomodate any combination of decks on the trailers or tractor. It's just a matter of pulling a hitch pin and reconnecting to a different hole. The engines are 9 horse cast iron Briggs. I was a little concerned at first, but there's more than enough power. I've mowed grass that was 8" to 10" tall without a problem. Pat

Nice custom job. Looks just like the factory built ones by Simplicity. http://www.simpletractors.com/simplicity/new_in_1969/trailing_mower.htm
I had looked at a Simplicity set in rough condition, but the owner wanted nearly $1800, WITHOUT the engines. Couldn't find another one, so I downloaded a parts manual and used it as a referance to build this set. Can't imagine that Simplicity sold very many of these. Not too many people that can use a 12 foot mowing outfit, so most purchasors must have been commercial. I'm sure the price also limited sales. 1969 price WITHOUT the mowing decks (#990509), was $855. The recommended decks were the 990576 48" decks at $197 each. Trailers, hitch, and two decks totalled $1249, only $75 less than a new 3212V with 48" deck.

Hello glad I got on this site. I hope to upload a couple of photos of my Simplicity Broadmoor
Model 707 Tractor. I have replaced all the belts on it and installed a new ignition switch.
Have a mower deck which was in poor shape , repaced a couple of bushings and welded the
deck where there was some holes. The tractor and mower deck came from a friend and the
mower deck metal was getting pretty thin. Some new metal was put in it and we also undercoated the underside of the deck. This was done by my friend Greg Toulman.
I have not put the mower deck on the tractor yet, waiting for Greg to come home and give me a hand. Can you please tell me if there is a manual for the mower deck and where I could get one.
I would also like to get some moon wheel discs as well.
I will try and down load some photos of the tractor when my wife shows me how to.
I really love driving this tractor and also how well it is made compare today's tractors, especially the flexible rear end and the rollers.
      Tell the next time
      Paul
