Bad S/G ?

I got this 64 broadmoor last year,my first tractor,the s/g always started the engine but wouldn't charge the battery.In a chance conversation with one of the mechanics at the large commercial farm where i work-they don't have anything as small as this so i use it in tight spots a few times a week,he checked it over with a meter and found the problem right off --the ammeter ,which never worked was dead ,no current running thru it to get back to the battery so he jumped it and now she's charging fine ! hope this will help some one with a similar problem.
