HELP 712 won't start

Recommended Posts

Wphelps
I have heard some sort of grinding coming from the starter unit on my 712H. I took out the starter and looked at the teeth and put it back in with some lube on the spiral teeth of the shaft(sorry if used wrong word). Well put It back in and makes a sound like the impact wrenches do. I think the spiral teeth on the shaft are stripped letting the gear with the teeth that hit the fly wheel slip.It sounds horrible and won't turn the engine over. Does this mean I need to get a whole new starter or gear or what. if a picture Is needed to clarify my question I can do that tomorrow. Thanks for your help.

I think It is the shaft but I took the starter off of the john deere 316 and I has a spacer at the end of the gear the Ac gear spins about 1/4" more than the one with the spacer. I have no clue. should I go and put a washer or go find a spacer

Best way to adjust the depth of a starter gear engagement into the flywheel teeth is with the air shroud off the engine. This way you can turn the gear till it is sitting in the right place and then determine if it needs shim washers because some factory plastic part has broken and fallen off. I had a starter on a B/S Vanguard break the plastic stop which allowed it to hit the flywheel hard enough to prevent it from turning. I pulled the pin and added washers till it stopped in the correct spot. Still working fine for the guy I sold it to.

Hello glad I got on this site. I hope to upload a couple of photos of my Simplicity Broadmoor
Model 707 Tractor. I have replaced all the belts on it and installed a new ignition switch.
Have a mower deck which was in poor shape , repaced a couple of bushings and welded the
deck where there was some holes. The tractor and mower deck came from a friend and the
mower deck metal was getting pretty thin. Some new metal was put in it and we also undercoated the underside of the deck. This was done by my friend Greg Toulman.
I have not put the mower deck on the tractor yet, waiting for Greg to come home and give me a hand. Can you please tell me if there is a manual for the mower deck and where I could get one.
I would also like to get some moon wheel discs as well.
I will try and down load some photos of the tractor when my wife shows me how to.
I really love driving this tractor and also how well it is made compare today's tractors, especially the flexible rear end and the rollers.
      Tell the next time
      Paul
