BGB shaft play

I'm putting my b112 back together after having the pulley shaft for the variable speed pulley welded up, turned, and re-ground. According to the parts diagram I have not lost anything, and the parts are where they should be. However, the shaft is able to slide about a fourth of an inch to the right and back again. This is with the pulley installed and the lock nut torqued as specified. I also noticed that one of the bevel gears can move right and left as well. Is this normal? Should I add a ring so the shaft is fixed in place? When I took the Bevel gear housing apart I noted it looked like the bevel gear had been moving on the shaft from right to left. I assumed it ws because things had gotten loose over the years. Thanks in advance for the feedback.

When putting on the side plate there is a shim stack needed that will keep your diven shaft more in place. You need the repair manual to guide you thru it. You can get that at the Simplicity web site.
