BGB Input shaft

Simplicity wanted around $95 for a new input shaft for the BGB. I decided that was rediculous, so I started making one of my own a couple weeks back. COuld only work a few days at school, so thats why it took so long. I have the part exact in every way, except I couldn't cut the woodruff key because the school didn't have a cutter for it. So instead I just cut a normal kewyay with a little lip so the key can't slide out. It's hard to see in this picture, but there is a hole drilled and threaded in the end. I don't think its too bad, I used a piece of scrap, so I have $0 in it, and a couple hours.

Looks pretty good too me Max, sure beats the heck out paying $95 if it works. What is the gear chart that the shaft is laying on?

Thanks, I was using the chart to see if the company had any gears that fit the BGB, as $120 each is rediculous, and out of the question. Too bad I can't make them yet. I have a set by that company, but they are for the old b's.

Why don't you post some information on the name of the company, website, etc. and what part number gears you've used from them in the past and what Simplicity part number they were substituted for. If nothing else, take a picture of the gear chart and post it.

Hi, The set purchased from that company (Martin) was purchased by a friend of my uncles that worked at a machine shop. I looked through the charts, and found nothing close. I have all the measurements that they require, but I'm not sure if they would be bothered with getting 1 set. I'll have to look into it further, if i cant get a set from them, I'll have to try contacting the original company that made them (Arrow Gear) I have looked through the gears they carry, and none are the same as they used in the BGB's

If you check thru Jacks Small Engine http://www.jackssmallengines.com/ the bevel gears are under $60.00 and they are a site sponsor. Nice work on the shaft.

Nice work Graham. Hope you gave thanks last week for the school you go too, pretty cool a 15 year old can get that skill level in high school.

Looks great Graham, but I do see one problem. The shaft needs to be hardened where it runs on the needle bearing. Been there, done that, and the shaft lasted about three hours. Pat

Looks good Graham. Everyone, I met Graham and his family on my Ont. trip and I must say if he is any indication of what this club and collecters in general have to rely on for the future, we are in GREAT hands. His aptitude and attitude is exceptional. People like him make this club great.

Looks great. I had a worn shaft on my lanlord and had a friend cut new key ways on the old shaft. The shaft was ok just the key ways had some play in them.
