Well what do you know...

I meant to post this with pictures before the end of last week, but as usual, I screwed up taking them and the wife took the digital camera up to upstate ny this weekend, so I have to wait till mon. to retake pics. First, I got the chains on the landlord and was able to plow after this last storm. Finally. The thing acted up again, but different from last time(s)--found out the thumb screw on the main jet on the carb is VERY loose and drifts with the vibration of the engine. Second, one of the 6008s I got in Nov. are finally running, thanks to Kirk's generous donation of an old MTD w/ a 12 hp I/C engine. I just need to rig an independent choke cable, put the dash tower back together and fine tune the carb adjustments. It was also thanks to Kirk that I'm plowing (not to mention running, after pointing out a head gasket problem :I on the tractor!) He hooked me up with the plow and his article on tire chains were an immense help. Thanks buddy! Also, a thanks to Nick for keeping Murphy occupied long enough for me to get these things done! You can keep him! --Jim

Sounds like the tension spring on the needle screw is weak or missing. It goes between the head of the screw and carb base. If it is just weak give it a streach if it is missing a ball point pen spring will work untill you can get the right one.

Thanks Maynard...it is apparently missing..don't see one (it's on the outside of the carb, correct?). Also, re: the 12hp, where should the yellow wire go (they're almost always yellow) that ends on the same post as the black cutoff wire for the coil, the one that's on the post at the throttle linkage assembly. It was missing from the simplicity when I got it. Thanks. --Jim

The yellow wire possibly went to a fuel cut off valve on the carb. If the carb has been changed and there is no valve under the bowl just tape the wire up and tuck in away somewhere. It could also be a ground wire. MTD's used this on there plastic dash models for the ground from the ignition switch to cut the ignition when the key is turned off.

There are two wires that go on the terminal just above the points box one goes to the coil the other to the ing. switch this puts a ground on the points and coil to shut the engine off.

Right you are (again) Maynard. Now that I have the carb adjusted a little better, it won't cut out when I have it on low idle! Key cutoff dosn't work after all. I'll deal with that in the spring. I can just ground plug in meantime. I'm also getting a flame out the exhaust after it shuts down--no backfire, just kind of a "flare-up". Any ideas? I'm (reasonably) sure it has to do with adjustments. Idles and runs great. Thanks.
