Hi everybody. Its been a while, but my engine is going again (re: 'newbie questions"). The problem was that the timing gear on the cam had slipped, whats amazing is that it is only held in position by friction, and a bolt which tightens it onto a taper. I still don't know why it slipped, but why tempt Murphy it's purring like a.........well a Briggs. So once again thanks for all your help. So the tractor has had a bath and with the engine going i've been able to test drive it and everything seems to work as it should, so now all i have to do is pull it apart and paint it and then get around to fixing the deck, it needs a new spindle. So heres a pic of it which will explain why it needs replacment. And heres a cool link to an online Briggs Manual http://www.tpub.com/content/recoveryvehicles/TM-5-4240-501-14P/
