Has anyone removed the gears and counterweight cover from a 16hp. Bigggs & statton engine, so it will fit in an older tractor? If so, will it run ok? or will there be to much vibration John

John, On the Kohler singles, removal of the counterweights doesn't make much difference. Most people do it when tractor pulling. Not sure about B/S. Probably the same.

Im not sure I completely follow what you mean. Are you refering to the counterwieght cover under the flywheel? The location of the taper for the crank would stop the outside demintions from changeing. I thought the reason the later model engines wouldn't fit was because of the height deferance. I'm sure I've missed something.

John if it helps any, I'm putting an old Brigg 16hp single in a B-10. The Briggs had gear drive eletric start and all I did was pull the starter, change blower shrouds for an older one and install a starter/generator. It's a little tight from the taller head but it all fits ok.

John, without looking at a counterbalanced and non counterbalanced side by side, I would guess no. I would think that inside the cover, the crank would be a larger diameter, not allowing you to use the other side plate. Don't think it would go in far enough to bolt up. Just a guess though. Besides that, I dont think there was a 16 built without counterbalance so you would have to build your own cover.

the counterweight cover makes the engine about 1-1/2" wider in the PTO area. or shorter pto shaft. and the grill looks like it will not clear the engine when mounted. I was wondering if there was a diffrent plain bearing cover that could be used? John

A 16 HP should fit tightly into any tractor that came with a 10Hp or larger engine, without modification, as far as I can tell... as long as it isn't one of those that had a gear reduction on the front PTO shaft. I bolted a 16 HP ring-gear start engine into my B-210 without ANY issues other than wiring changes to accomodate the built-in alternator.... I understand that there are clearance issues on the 700/725/B-1 vintage tractors that must be addressed. Not sure of the 9HP tractors (Landlord 314 or early B-10), but I think the 16 HP engine should bolt right in there also...

John, I put a 16hp briggs & Stratton engine in a AC B-12. The engine bolts right in like the 12hp engine did. From the outside it looks like a 12hp engine. The 12 hp Briggs & Stratton also comes with counterweights, have one in my AC HB-112 tractor this engine was in a old MTD tractor. www.simplicityva.com Karl
